BORSTAL ESCAPEE.

ALLEGED ILL-TREATAIENT.

INVERCARGILL, May 5. The evidence at the inquiry concerning the alleged ill-treatment of T. G. Flanagan, a Borstal escapee, on the occasion of his recapture concluded today. The warders denied that they cruelly ill-treated Flanagan. Angus C. Robertson, warder, stated that Warder Kennedy called on Flannagan to put up his hands. The latter made a step towards the line, and in the heat of the moment witness hit him wtih the back of his hand on the face. . Eye-witnesses might have mistaken the movements of the search of Flanagan for violent treatment.

Warder Kennedy corroborated this. Chief-Warder Trimble deposed that he did not see any blows struck.

The Alagistrate will hear counsel before reporting to the Government.
