THE COMPETITIONS

GOOD HOUSE ON SATURDAY NIGHT. \ EXCELLENT PROGRAMME PRESENTED. TALENTED COMPETITORS. The Opera House was full almost to capacity on Saturday evening for the continuation of the Manawatu Competitions Society’s seventh annual festival, and an excellent programme was presented. As on the opening night, everything went off well, but, with the lengthy number of items put on, the programme was weft concluded until well after 11 o’clock.

Vocal, instrumental and elocutionary items, with dancing, were. presented, and a high standard of ability was revealed. Perhaps the most entertaining item of the programme was the first section (serious) of the .impromptu speech contest, for which there were three competitors. Coining on to the stage in their turn, they were made aware of the subject on which they had to talk, were given one minute in which to compose their thoughts and then were given five minutes in which to address the audience. The subject was “The Value of Tact,” and each of the three competitors—all local —-handled it well, receiving well merited applause. Tlie haka competition had to bo abandoned, the only team entered defaulting. Two competitors who were well received during the evening were Charles Stewart (Wellington), a youthful performer, who gave an excellent Lauder impersonation in the song in character section, and Gladys Smyth (Lower Hutt), whose exhibition in the skipping dance was warmly commended by the judge. Detailed results of tho afternoon and evening sessions were as follow:
