This work cost £29 13s 6d and had it not been for tho strenuous efforts of tho committee the amount would have boon easily double. Thanks are duo to the parents who gave assistance in this direction. During the year tho Hockey Club handed over £l2O for tho purpose of acquiring dressing sheds and appointments. The school has now fine dressing sheds which are a great asset to tho school and also for any function held on tho grounds. Since tho last annual mooting tho headmaster’s room has been beautified by the pi'esence of five most beautiful oil paintings. Those have not boon purchased out of funds, but have been donated. I wish to thank our auditor, Mr H. V. Caverhill, for the past two years’ services performed. The teaching stalf are worthy of praise for tho progress mado by the scholars under their tuition. Tho percentage of candidates securing proficiencies was very high. Regarding sport, tho teachers have encouraged it and their efforts have been rewarded as may bo seen- by tho challenge cups in the headmaster's room.”

Tho report of the Tiakitahuna School Committee for the year ending 28th February, 1928, was as follows: —During the year our school has been raised from a grade I. to grade 11. and in consequence we may possibly ioso our present teacher, During our term we have worked amicably with Mr Garner and the committee feels that its thanks should bo accorded him for tho interest ho has displayed in all matters pertaining .to his duties. The committee also desires its appreciation to Mrs Buchanan to bo placed on record for the fine effort she made with her concert and dance which so materially assisted tho school committee financially; also to Miss Matheson for her kind offer to instruct the junior Red Cross Guild. The school is tho recipient of a Red Cross cabinet from the guild and this has been much appreciated. All work in connection with tho grounds has been well done and thanks are duo to tho gentlemen who attended the working bees held for this purpose. The attendance at committee meetings during our term has been excellent, only one absentee being recorded during our period. The finances show a balance of £9 5s 4d for the term ending April 23. Tho special account shows a balanco of 11s 9d. Prior to tho householders’ meeting a brief meeting of tho old committee was held, there being present. Messrs Matheson (chairman), Voss, Morley and Parker. Various matters were discussed with reference to recommendations to tho incoming committee. A vote of thanks was passed to tho chairman.
There was a record attendance of householders and it was pleasing to see so many present. Tho balance-sheet was read and adopted. Tho now committee elected comprises Messrs D. Rowland, P. Parker, M. Voss, E. Nielsen and A. Matheson. The chairman thanked the householders for their attendance. He also thanked the committeemen for their past service and help. A vote of thanks was passed to tho chairman. At a subsequent meeting of tho now committee Mr A. Matheson was elected chairman and Mr, M. Voss secretary.
ASIIHURST SCHOOL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ASIIHURST, April 24. There was a -record attendance at the householders’ meeting. Mr W. N. Brewor was voted to tho chair. Tho financial statement showed a credit balance of £l3 10s 7d on the general account and £53 4s lOd in the special account. Tho chairman thanked the committee for tho 'manner in which they had attended the meetings throughout tho year and for their co-operation and ever good i’eelipg which prevailed between the chairman and members. It was always a pleasure to preside over such a committee, said the chair man. Special mention was made of the never failing energy of the secretary (Mr
G. R. Taylor) and that the healthy state of tho finances was largely, due to his energy and ability. In thanking the householders, tho chairman remarked how encouraged the committee were at seeing that so many had attended tho meeting which was easily a record number. The election of soven committeemen resulted as follows Messrs W. N. Brewer (re-elected chairman), G. R. Taylor . (reelected secretary), W. G. Roinly, H. Woodnoofe, J. Barrett and A. D. Bauckham (all re-elected) and A. McKinlay. The annual report was as follows: —The past year’s work has been most satisfactory. Tho committee’s financial year ended on 29th February, when we hud a credit balanco of £66 15s sd. Tho committee has not carried out any big improvements during tho year, but has confined its efforts mainly to the general maintenance and care of the school and environment. By tho many complimentary references made by visitors to our town wo have every reason to believe that our school and surroundings compare more than favourably with other schools of the same size. We had hoped that wo would have been able during the past year to install a septic tank service, but owing to our inability to obtain a sufficient supply of water this most desirable sanitary convenience has not yet been installed. The matter is still Being pursued and we trust that tho incoming committee will find a solution to the problem. Tho children’s ball held during the year was a great success, and our thanks are due to all who so willingly and ably assisted. Tho annual picnic was again held in the Domain and every effort was mado to give the children a good time and in this we believe wo were successful. Our thanks are duo to all who assisted and, responded to our appeal for funds. The committee deeply regrets the loss of one of its most valued and enthusiastic members in the person of Mr D. Crowley. The late Mr Crowley was a very keen ' supporter and worker for the school and his death was a serious loss to the committee. The roll number shows an increase over last year. The present roll is 145 against 133 last year. During the year we lost Miss Coup who received an appointment as sole teacher at Hinemoa. The vacancy was filled by Mrs Walker who remained on the staff till the end of tho year. Both of these teachers gave excellent service. Mr J. Orgias has been appointed substitute assistant for this year. The sports activities of the school have been well sustained and football, hockey, basketball, cricket and tennis have been played, while the teaching of swimming has been assiduously performed. In this connection we think that the headmaster and his staff are to be very highly complimented on tho results obtained, especially considering the difficulties' under which they labour in teaching tho children to swim. We think it praiseworthy that 35 children were taught to swim last year. In conclusion, we wish to thank the headmaster and his staff for their loyal co-operation and help during tho past year. Our thanks are also duo to many of tho parents who have so spontaneously responded to our call for assistance many times during the year. BUNNYTHORPE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The secretary, Mr L. Pascoe, read the balancesheet which showed receipts £145 17s and expenditure £IOO 19s Bd, leaving a credit alliance of £45 17s 4d. The daylight saving measure was strongly condemned by a resolution endorsing (bo one passed by the committee somo lime back. Oil tho subject of the sohool excursion, it was decided to leavo it in the hands of the incoming committee. A numoer of subjects of interest to householders was dealt with. The election of the committee resulted in six of tho old committee being reelected. Tho committee is:—Alessrs W. T. Alaxwcll (chairman), L. Pascoe (secretary), J. Scheidt, W. Eggloton, H. J. Dixon, F. Burton and R. Sinclair. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting. BAINESSE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) BAINESSE, April 24. . Tho annual report of the Bainesse School Committee stated that minor improvements have been carried out. The basket and tennis courts have been fenced in, horizontal bars erected, etc., and the eastern approach to tho school raised. At the last proficiency examination six piqiils were presented; two gained proficiency and three competency certificates. Air Sandle (headteacher) resigned in December last. Airs Gray took over tho position as headteacher at the commencement of this year and won tho esteem of her pupils straight away. Coming with excellent qualifications, Airs Gray should prove a valuable teacher and an asset to our school by her genial disposition. The general attendance for last year was good, nine gaining attendance certificates. The school accounts showed receipts £SO 17s 8d and expenditure £45 8s 6d. The social account showed receipts £7O 13s Id and expenditure £34 6s Id. The incoming committee consists of Air 11. Alillard (chairman), Messrs D. Tennent, T. Robertson, AI. Ryan and T. Grammer. OTHER SCHOOLS. Whakarongo.—Alessrs W. Woodd (chairman), M. Kimdsen (secretary), J. Hodgson, 7. Johanson and S. Davey. The report stated: Our main undertaking has been to commence a scheme of ground improvements. In this connection we found it necessary to appeal to tho householders for assistance, either with voluntary labour or donations, tho results being most gratifying, good work being dono a working bee, and tho sum of £ll being received in donations. We also hojd a childien’s ball and a concert, both being most successful, the nett profits being £ll and_ £8 9s 6d respectively. In this connection our thanks are duo to Mrs Eggers, the head teacher, for the manner in which she organised both functions, also tho ladies of the district for their assistance. Although decided improvements havo been effected your committee consider that other improvements in tho nature of drainago are urgently needed, and with this in view havo purchased 1200 tiles. We would therefore recommend to the incoming committee i to havo these laid down as soon as possible. Tho annual prize-giving was held on breaking-up day, and the school picnic on the second Friday in February. Owing to the Ashhurst Domain not being available it was hold at tho Gorge, and being favoured with fine weather was most successful. A question to be put before tho householders this evening is tho custom of prizegiving, it being Held by somo_ that this practice should be done aw'ay with, especially as no special awards are made. The inspectors’ reports have been most satisfactory, tho teachers’ work of both classes being commended, although the infant class suffered by a change of teachers during the year and tho whole school, in common with other schools in tho district, experienced a low record of attendance. Tho committee has boon pressing for several much needed improvements in th eschool building itself, the most serious jyatter. being tho draughtiness of tho building, to remedy which the board has covered the walls with draught proof material. In conclusion, tho committee wish to thank every one who has assisted, and without whoso assistance it would not havo been able to do the work which has boon done, and trusts that the householders will continue to support in a like manner ho incoming committee. A paper hat dance will bo held on Friday, 4th Alay, in aid of improvement work. Hiwinui. —The annual meeting of householders was well attended. Mr Wilton presided and presented the report of the com-
