A TRAMP’S HEROISM.
THRILLING STORY. LONDON, Jan. 21. The Yorkshire Post features a thrilling story of heroism that was related in Hyde, Cheshire. A lonely tramp, walking on an embankment, heard screams and saw' a boy, Herbert Knowles, with his foot wedged in points in a railway cutting. The tramp vainly tried to release the boy by undoing his boot. Then a Manchester train whistled. The tramp twisted the boy’s boot parallel with the earth, lay down beside him and pressed him between the rails. The train whizzed overhead. Both escaped unscathed. Rescuers collected a few shillings and gave them to the tramp, w'ho declined to give his name.—A. and N.Z. cable.
