RACING NEWS.

would only fill third berth to Silver Rule and High Disdain in a fust run race. Royal Duke, Briar Root and Banket have already got on the winning list, while Moorcgas, Flicker and Monetize huvo shown promising form. The race bears a very open appearance but probably High Disdain, Goblin Market and Flicker will carry most support.

Wellington Cup.—Star Stranger fills the post of honour at the head of the field with 9.8 and, while records point to his task being almost an impossible one, the gelding cannot be passed over-lightly. Fit and well Piuthair would bo numbered among the dangerous brigade, but the hard going might find her out. Then comes a likely quartette in Mask, Set Sail, Laughing Prince and Joy Bird, and nuoio unlikely things have happened than the last named putting forward a great bid for the honours. Of the’ lower division David Garrick and Bennanee are well worthy pf consideration and on a summing up of the field the writer thinks that Star Stranger, Joy Bird and Bcnnancc are bkely to run well. Anniversary Handicap.—With an 8.0 minimum the handicapper has placed Thorndnle at the head with 9.5 —31bs in excess of Sir Archie, a winner over a milo at Ellerslie. Nincompoop is on the same mark with another southerner in Overhaul 21bs away. The last named has been showing signs of improved form of late and with I.e Chaucas and Damaris should ho found to the fore. Sir Roy and Assuranco should also riot lack support. Telegraph Handicap.—Patrons will be set another problem in the open sprint event in which Aussie, a winner over a mile and also six furlongs at Ellerslie, is given the steadier of 9.7. The northerner will, without doubt, carry his burden gallantly, but Cimabuc, Grown Area and Eulalic should hold him at a diiferenec of little less than a stone. Tlie.n come Booster, Money Order and Shirley, another likely trio, with Paper chase, Lausanne, Oovent Garden and Good as Gold possibilities. Cimabue, Crown Area and Booster should be in the firing lino

Ruapehu Handicap.—-Broad Aero promises to bo in Mtrong demand for tho Ruaphcu Handicap, although his task will ho nmdo all the more difficult; by reason of tho fact that The Raider mow moots him on 91 bs hotter terms. Polydeotes and tho southerners, Rotor and Camisader, ulso promise to make tho race interesting. WAIRGA MEETING. HANDICAP WON BY IiUIKAI, Per Press Association. U-tixtu.-v, Jan. 19. FIXTURES.

Jan. 21 Ngaruawahia R.C. Jan. 21 Bay of Islands R.C. Jan. 21,23 Foxton R. C. Jan. 21, 23, 25 Wellington R. C. Jan. 25 Pino Bush Hack R.C. Jan. 28, 30 Takapuna J.C. SUMMER FIXTURES. AT WELLINGTON AND FOXTON. (By “Binocular.”) To-morrow and Monday will find residents of this district offered the choice of attending two fixtures within close radius—at Wellington and Foxton—but probably owing to the adjacency of the seaside course, the majority in this neighbourhood will elect to journey to Foxton. The unfortunate clash of tiio two meetings has had a marked effect upon the strength of the fields at the latter fixture, but there should, nevertheless, bo sufficient starters in the majority of events to ensure interesting racing. Following is the card to bo presented

at Foxton : POROUTAWHAO HURDLES, of 150 sovs. One mile and five furlongs.

San Pedro, the topweight, has shown indifferent form for sonic time past, although ho ran fairly well over the concluding stages of the Second Hack Hurdles at Marlon on the concluding day and, being on his home course, he might well improve upon that display. Polyphemus, in view of the showing ho made at Woodville, promises, however, to be the chief medium of support, with Kilburn a public fancy also. NOVICE STAKES, of 100 sovs, for two year-olds and upwards. Special tveights. Six furlongs. Biono Land Rent Braeberry (imp.) Maranga Cavity Royal Black Cloyno Rash Dreamy Red Bank Discourse Service Fortalico Shining Star Golden Shadow Warfillo Ironic War Wings Lady Raven A big field promises to be presented in the Novice Stakes, but class is not particularly strong, the majority having little form t:o commend them. Shining Star has repeatedly filled platings without being actually able to salute the judge, while Warfillo and Discourse have also shown up prominently in previous engagements. With L. G. Morris in the saddle, probably Warfillo will bo most sought after, with Shining Star and Discourse also in demand. FOXTON CUP, of 300 sovs. One mile and a-quarter.

Eight candidates at present stand their ground in the Foxton Cup, Royal Game being at the head of the table with 8.13, but the going and distance may not suit him. Kilmiss is somewhat similarly situated, but, on the basis of her showing in the Marton Cup, Henna promises to put forward a big bid for the honours. Gazo is a likely sort. The lightweight division does not appear to threaten any real danger and Henna, Gaze and Royal Game should contest the role of favourite on the day. HIMATANGI HANDICAP, of 120 sovs. Six furlongs.

Vigilance, who is topweight in the Hima- ; tangi Handicap, also fills a similar role in the succeeding event, in which is also the : Awapuni representative, Lin Arlington, and 1 both should run well in whatever race thenconnections elect to start them. In thenabsence Lady Cynthia, White Ringlet and Maui may bo in request. AWAHOU HACK, of 130 sovs. Seven furlongs.

Vigilance and Lin Arlington should both j run good seven furlong races in the Awahou Hack Handicap in which Twink, who is entered for the Cup contest, is also included. The trio should prove dangerous to other contestants in the event of their going to the post on the day, although some opposition might well bo forthcoming from Volplane. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP, of 170 sovs. Six furlongs.

Some doubt exists ns to how many of tho acceptors in the sprint event will face the starter. Epistle has displayed marked consistency of late and she should carry her 8.13 with distinction, although the services of L. G. Morris will bring Vast Acre into stronger demand. Dobbin will be meeting Vast Acre on 41bs better terms than when the latter beat hirn on tho concluding day at Marton, but it is doubtful whether such will enable the positions to bo reversed. MAROTIRI HACK HANDICAP, of 110 sovs. Five and a-lialf furlongs.

Tho scurry distance of tho Marotiri Hack Handicap should find Helotis, Bissac, White Ringlet and Card Trick furnishing tho more dangerous devision, but the topweight will bo without her usual pilot and the outcome might well be determined by the horsemen on top of tho respective candidates. HERRINGTON WELTER, of 170 sovs. Orte mile.

Beaumont, the topweight in the Herrington Welter, also figures in tho open sprint, but it is probable that he will elect to start in the longer distance event, and, despite his poundage, be will have to be respected. Bonogne has not displayed any form of late, but Wlienuanui got on the winning list at Marton and should provo to bo Beaumont’s most serious opponent. Of the others Our Jack may possess some claims to consideration, although since his third to Paitonu and Waicullus at Otaki lie lias done little to commend him.

AT TRENTHAM. WINNERS WELL CONCEALED. Big fields and good class animals will bo seen out at Trcntham and a great day’s sport is offered patrons. Proceedings will bo opened with the Highweight Handicap in which three recent winners in Mandarine, Ptotowhero and First Sight are within 41bs of one another. On the basis of performances Rotowhero and Mandarine are worthy of support, while First Sigh ran well enough at Manawatu to receive serious consideration. Wellington Stakes. —Although beaten by Staghunter at Ellerslie, the shorter distance will bring Child’s Play again into strong demand with Gascony as the filly’s most serious opponent. Apprentices’ Plato. —Lady Lirnond’s performance in open company at Manawatu will bring the Limond filly into strong demand for the Apprentices’ Plate, although Goshawk and Catkin should offer some opposition. Awapuni furnishes two competitors in Blimp and Some Lad and the pair will not be without friends, although on Marton form the former reads preferable. Fitzherbert Handicap.—High Disdain, the topweight in the youngster’s race, found 9.3. too much for him on the concluding day at Awapuni, but the outings no doubt will have done him good and the 41bs less on his back should still keep him in favour. The southerner, Goblin Market, was expected to win at New Zealand Cup time, but
