GREAT BUSH FIRES.

EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 19. The Star’s Mercer correspondent telephones that great bush fires are raging between Mercer and Whangamarino. . In the Taupin plantation last night it swept through 1000 acres, leaving only about 50 acres undamaged. It also swept the Pukemiro plantation right up to the manager’s house, which was saved. Then the wind changed, and the fires are now raging in Zimmerman’s property at Whangamarino. Great damage has been done particularly to wattle trees.
