BRILLIANT PONSFORD.

RECORD BREAKING INNINGS

MASTER BATSMAN’S PERFORM-

ANCE.

Received December 19, 11.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 19.

Commenting on Ponsford’s recordbreaking innings, the Herald says: “Throughout his 'innings he was steady and unflurried and at the conclusion the crowd rose and cheered. His was the innings of a master batsman for after tlie luncheon adjournment, when a strict leg theory was was adopted by the bowlers, Ponsford stood well away on the leg side and frequently patted the ball through the slips from that position. Old cricketers compared him. in that regard with Trumper, and what greater praise could be bestowed. Apart from securing runs, it was a magnificent physical performance to stand at tho crease and defy the wiles of-the Queensland bowlers for nearly two days. Ponsford may lack the polish of Trumper, the daring of Maccartney, and the hard hitting of Lyons, but in the matter of run getting lie,is supreme.” The Herald adds: “Ponsford’s record in Sheffield matches is remarkable. He has batted 31 times, twice liot out, and scored 2921, an average of. 100.6 runs.—Press Association.

In t}ie Sheffield Shield match at Melbourne between- aVictoria and Queensland, Ponsford made 437 in one innings, a world’s record for first-class cricket.
