CHANNEL SWIM

TRAINER ORIGINATES HOAX. LADY DOCTOR’S EXPLANTION. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received October 17, 1.10 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 16. In connection with the Channel Swim, Doctor Logan explains that she used the fictitious name of McLellan primarily because she did not wish to involve the medical profession in tho hoax. She admitted that the letter deposited in tho safe could have been recovered by her, but her intention was so honest that she did not think of directing the letter to bo opened at a certain date.

Dr. Logan says that tho crew knew everything. She only asked them to keep silent for a month, after which they could say what they liked. Dr. Logan produced a log kept by Commander Adam, a retired naval officer, in which he recorded when and where she left /and re-entered the water.

The episode perturbs other Channel swimmers. Miss Gleitze is prepared to sign an affidavat, but 6lie doubts if it is now any use. Dr. Logan says that the best way to restore the prestige of the British women swimmers would be to re-swim. She is willing if her expenses are paid and official observers are supplied, preferably an international hoard. She further pointed out that well-known sportsmen supervised Mr Lem.mes’s swim.

Dr. Logan’s trainer, Carey, a bus driver of Hythe, shoulders the responsibility of originating the hoax, to which he persuaded Dr. Logan to agree. —A. and N.Z. cable.
