EMPIRE RADIO.
LIKELY BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
BROADCASTING COMPANY’S TESTS.
LONDON, Sept. 30. The British Broadcasting Corporation says that it will begin experiments ip a fortnight at Chelmsford station, where an experimental shortwave transmitter is being erected. AVitli this it is hoped to reach amateurs all over the Empire with whom it is in regular touch . . If the result is satisfactory, it is added, the corporation will start a limited transmission before Christmas. The experiments will probably include the beam service. HAMPERING ROYALTIES. At a meeting of the British Radio Manufacturers’ Association considerable dissatisfaction was expressed at a new offer by Marconi, Ltd., not to charge fresh royalties on sets which were being replaced. The meeting desired a reduction on the royalty from 12s 6d a valve to 5s or less. The charge has seriously hampered British manufacturers of radio sets, it is pointed out, as there are no royalties in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and several other countries.
British manufacturers desiring to export to Australia have had to pay 15s a valve, while Americans could export to Australia without paying royalty. The meeting decided to press Marconi’s for a further reduction.
