THE DAY IN PARLIAMENT. ROSS SEA WHALERS. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard). WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. In the House of Representatives today Mr V. H. Potter (Roskill) raised a question in regard to the Ross Sea whaling. Ho urged the Government to request the Imperial Government to declare a close season for whales in the dependency. Hon G. J. Anderson replied that Mr Potter had raised a very big question, but thought he need not worry about a close season at present. The question of whaling in the South Seas was now being considered by the nations interested, and something might eventuate from the consultations now taking place. LEAVE FOR POLICEMEN
Sunday leave for policemen was mentioned in the House of Representatives to-day by Mr E. J. Howard (Christchurch South) who gave notice of his intention to ask the Minister of Justice whether it was a fact that constables in charge of sub-stations had been deprived of their one Sunday per month leave. There was much laughter when the member added “and are not even allowed time off to attend church.” PETITION TO PARLIAMENT.
Mr W. C. McCarthy, of Palmerston North, has petitioned Parliament (through Mr J. A. Nash) stating that an application to the present ValuerGeneral (Mr Brooks) for further revision work lie was informed by him that he had received reports from two of the valuers that Mr McCarthy was incompetent as a valuer. The petitioner desires to be heard in rebuttal of such reports. THE WHEAT DUTIES.
On the third reading of the Customs Amendment. Bill Mr G. Forbes (Hurunui) said that lie was glad to hear that, though the Labour members had voted against the wheat proposal, they were not against it, but wanted it done in another way. He was sorry that some of the North Island members had voted against it just because they happened to be Jiving in the North Island. A strip of water between them .should not have made such a difference merely because they wanted to consider the matter of getting a few votes.
