FOXTON NEWS

FOXTON, Oct. 13. Tho monthly meeting of the Foxton District High School Committee was presided over by the chairman (Mr J. K. Horn blow) It was reported that damage had been done to certain of tho school windows as a result of tho recent strong winds and the janitor was instructed that in future he was to see that all windows were secure at night. The workmen on the new building made application for the use of portion of the old school residence. The request was granted provided it did not interfere with the class work. A discussion took place in regard tio technical instruction and the hope was expressed that evening classes would be formed when the new building was completed. In reference to the agricultural class, Mr M. E. Perreau offered the use of a piece of ground for experimental plots free of cost, provided tho committee attended to the fencing. The offer was accepted with thanks. Tho question of granting leave of absence to teachers was discussed and the opinion was expressed that such leave should not prejudice the welfare of the pupils. An interesting discussion took place in regard to fiostoring civic pride in the pupils and in this repsoct tho Mayor and Borough Council were commended for the good example they were setting.
On Wednesday afternoon the first of a series of road races for a points prize was held under the auspices of the Foxton Amateur Cycling Club. The course was once around the cemetery block, a distance of five miles. The placed riders were: — Chrystall (scr.) 1, P. Honour (20spc.) 2, Martin (16sec.) 3, L. King (lOsec.) 4. Mr and Mrs W. Kirkland arrived back in Foxton yesterday after spending a holiday in Honolulu. This week Mr F. de Ridder celebrated his 86th birthday. Mr Ridder, who is the tyler of the locol Masonic Lodge, received felicitations from the brethren at a meeting. He enjoys excellent health. At tho conclusion of the meeting of the Plunket Society this week, Mrs J. 11. Downes was entertained to tea and presented with a cream tureen as a token of the esteem in which she is held by members of the society. The Foxton Croquet Club also farowelled Mrs Downes and presented her with a crystal cruet. Mrs and Miss Downes left Foxton en route for Nelson yesterday. Mr Downes leaves here on Saturday.
