FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By "Binocular.”) Acceptances for all handicap events, also entries for Maiden Plate and Novice Stakes at the Waipawa meeting on Labour Day close on Monday at 8.15 p.m. Barryanda and Helen are reported to be doing solid work at Hawera. Both should play leading roles at Waverley later in tho month. Rayo did not fulfill his engagements at the Manawatu Hunt owing to having devolped a cold. He is to bo spelled till the winter. The Lamb and Royal Acre are reported to be thriving on solid work in tho Taranaki district and they should come to hand early. Frisco Jack is a local nomination for the steeplechase events at To Rapa later in tho month. The manner in which the son of Sir Frisco won at Dannevirke and at the Manawatu Hunt fixture makes him a distinct possibility in any company. Banjuke has been entered for tho chief cross-country event at Cambridge on Labour Day. Tho Bisogno gelding was favourite for tho Hunt Cup last Labour Day, but ho came to grief. On that occasion ho was carrying 9.7. Lady Spalpeen, who has yet to enter upon her racing for the. present season, may make a re-entry at the Waikato meeting where she has been entered for the hurdle and flat events. Last season the Spalpeen-Bell Amie mare competed on the flat, over fences and across country. The Riccarton owner-trainer, F. P. Claridge, is stated to possess a useful galloper in Donne, who was not raced till this season. He was bred by Sir R. Heaton Rhodes and although broken in as a two-year-old ws not put into work. At his third start he won in attractive manner at Kurow. When the ex-northerner Erin-go-Bragh was pulled up after finishing at Ashburton it was thought that he had broken a leg, but he was able to return to the birdcage little the worse. At Kurow, however, he broke down in his preliminary and it was found that he I had slipped a stifle.

The Kurow Cup was in reality an exorcise canter for Rapier, comments a southern writer, the Greyspoar making up the break opened up by Taboo in a remarkable manner. He will make his next appearance at Wellington with

the New Zealand Cup to follow next month.

The half brother to Vaward, tho winner of the Mosgiel Handicap at Dunedin on Thursday, who is in E. Murtagh’s stable in Taranaki, is stated to show promise.

Mr E. Riddiford has disposed of the Kilbroney gelding Mandarine to Mr H. Marshall, of Upiier Hutt, and he has joined Polonaise under the care of H. Benge.

Tho Acre-Spanker mare owned and trained by ”\V. Pine at Hawera is reported to be dovolping nicely and to be shaping well on the tracks in her work.

A four-yoar-ohl gelding by Tractor from Whiplash, the dam of Whipcord and Miss Winkie, is a recent addition to C. Gieseler’s stable at Wingatui.

Arpent damaged a foot while racing at tho Otago Hunt meeting last month, but, according to southern reports, he is quite sound again. Locally he was considered to have claims for consideration in the October Handicap on Thursday, but he failed to gain a place.

Tho two Palmerston jockeys T. Green and A. E. Ellis, filled first and second placings in tho Mosgiel Handicap at Dunedin on Thursday, the former piloting Vaward to victory and the latter Royal Game, the second place-getter.

After returning from the Grand National Meeting Peter Maxwell was given a brief let-up, but J. F. Tutchen has made a start with his preparation for future events. The Marble Arch — Jena gelding lias not been asked for anything very serious on the tracks as yet, but he is in the condition to make further progress when the time arrives.

David Garrick, the Australian-bred four-voar-old by Cornedv King from Camellia, put up a creditable performance when he captured the Park Stakes at the Napier Park meeting. He had only one previous win to his credit, when ho scored in the Taratahi Hack Handicap at the Carterton meeting, just twelve months ago. However, he is only a young horse and may improve with age.

Waltzer was in his element in tire heavy going at the Avondale meeting and ran two good races states a northern writer. Ho had not won a race since lie scored in the Second Division of the Welter Handicap at the Avondale meeting two years ago. He apears to be on tho improve, for ho gave weight and a beating to a big field of hacks when he scored in tho Mt. Albert Handicap.

Front Rank, the four-year-old filly in H. and A. Cutt’s stable, is coming on with each gallop, and the stylish manner in which she strode out over a mile recently (comments the Christchurch Star) is proof that she is in good health. As a three-year-old Front rank disappointed on more than one occasion, but it would cause little surprise if she wins a big handicap or two this season. She is likely to improve with age.

Rigmarole and Goblin Market, the two-year-olds in P. V. Mason's stable, have attracted a lot of attention lately by their doings on the tracks at Riccarton. Rigmaro'e is on the small side, while on tho other hand her stable mate is a very big youngster, who may require a lot of time. Both 6how undoubted speed in their work, but if the Mason stable is to be represented in tire McLean Stakes at' Wingatui Rigmarole will probably, be the one relied upon.

Juno Wine, the Hochclaga —Lorita Howard fillv purchased in Australia by Mr W. J. Wilson, is being exercised around the roads under F. Gilchrist’s care writes “Whalebone.” She is an exceptionally well-grown juvenile,* and has settled down nicely and quietly since being broken in.

The Valkyrian filly Valour has lightened up after her race in the Avondale Stakes states an Auckland writer. She showed pace during the early stages of tho race and was among the first three when the straight was reached and finished up in fifth position, a very creditable showing, considering it was her first race. - VETERAN RETIRES TAME FOX THE WARRRIOR. A great old battler who, despite the fact that ho had long since attained that time of life when racing equines aro to bo found browsing their remaining. days peacefully away in paddocks knee-deep in luscious grass, has like the brook gono on and on, Tamo Fox has at last been granted a well earned respite. Not that that respite had become absolutely essential, but with each passing year it had become evident that the old fellow, who had incidentally attained liis eleventh year, was becoming more difficult to get ready, while, with the harder tracks fast approaching, tho conditions in a hicli he revelled wero likewise being lost. A regular mud lark, ho had shown this season that he had taken on a now lease of life when, following his being most unlucky only to fill fourth berth in tho big event at tho Marton spring meeting, ho won the Heaton Park Handicap from Trcsham and Mint Leaf —two very useful performers —and thus made good his claims to tho honours which Captain Gazeley had beaten him for only tho previous season. By Volpono from Humdrum, tho bay gelding was imported from Australia by Mr T. Wilson formerly of Awapuni. He was raced by that gentleman with some success prior to passing on to a Mr Martin of Palmerston North, who in turn disposed of him to Mr W. Duncan, he entering F. Tilley’s stables at Fordell, and he proved a most successful stake earner. Advancing years naturally laid toll upon his vitality, but even as a six year old he started 13 times for three wins, three seconds, and one third. In that season he won the Waverley-Waitotara Cup and Huia Handicap at tire Otaki fixture, the following year finding him again contesting tho honours in tho latter event to silence tho opposition in striking fashion. Then followed his important succcgs when he led Arch Salute and Omahu home in the Parliamentary Handicap at tiro Wellington winter meeting when saddled with 10.11 —the topweight. Included among the also rans on that occasion were Dainty Step —a brilliant mare who later sustained a fractured leg at Awapuni, but who was saved for stud purposes and is now represented by a daughter in Dainty Ways, claiming Arrowsmith as her 6irc —Gold Kip, Royal Box, Demos, Forest Gold and 10 other good handicap performers. The 1922-23 season saw him start 14 times as an aged horse for one first —the Huia Handicap—three seconds' and one third, but then intervened a period of outs, his three starts in the 1923-4 season not being productive of any prize money. The following year saw him following a lifo of idleness, but the 1925-6 season found him again back in the active brigade only to fail to reproduce his old time form, five starts being non-productive. Meantime, however, he had passed from tho hands of F. Tilley into those of F. Carmont, of Foxton, the gelding having been purchased by a Palmerston North sportsman in Mr A. M. Williams. Outwardly a doubtful speculation, tho old follow was to prove that the confidence placed in him by his new owner had not been misplaced for following his filling second berth to Captain Gazeley in tho Heaton Park Handicap at tho Marton spring meeting last season, ho won tho Kairanga Handicap at the Manawatu Hunt fixture from Merry Damon and Beaumont with Opo. Novar and Rascal in tho unplaced division. Tho old fellow, who had long since attained the veteran stage, did not make another appearance till the closing ol the season thereafter, but was in great, order for early activities in the present season. A.fourth in the Marton Handicap on tho opening day of the past fixture —the first meting to be held on the re-modelled course—was followed by a victory in the Heaton Park Plandieap in a strong field. Going on to the Dannevirke meeting. Tame Fox annexed a second to Royal Game in tho Neaglo Memorial Handicap, but his two succeeding starts —at the Dannevirko Hunt and Manawatu Hunt — found him among tho also rans and with the tracks steadily growing harder. his owner has decided to let the old fellow spend his closing years in comparative ease. He has been turned out at Linton, but somo use will bo made of him as a hack. Mr Williams will not now have a candidate in the active ranks for his (Mountain Crag-San Fran mare) two-year-old is not being hurried. The same dam recently threw a colt foal to the imported Hunting Song, who is stated to bo built on promising lines. Tho local sportsman at one time held an interest in Miss Pat. who now runs in the interests of the Foxton mentor, F. Carmont. Incidentally the AcreSartovna filly is now being put over the sticks, but as she is somewhat small it is problematical whether she will prove a success., WELLINGTON ACCEPTANCES.
