DROUGHT LOSSES

SEVERE IN AUSTRALIA. SEVEN MILLION SHEEP, COST OF HAND FEEDING. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 8, 10.20 a.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 8. Sir Graham Waddell, president of the Graziers’ Association, of New South Wales, stated, after a tour through the drought-stricken areas of Queensland, that he had come to ■ the conclusion that Australia, save for improved transport facilities, was in a no better position to-day to fight the drought than it was 50 years ago. It was depressing, added Sir Graham Waddell, to see hundreds of miles of such fine sheep country, temporarily abandoned.

Where flocks were kept together hand feeding had to be resorted to, bub the cost was exceedingly heavy. It was impossible, he thought, to estimate the drought losses, but an accepted estimate of 7,000,000 sheep was certainly not excessive. — Association.
