PRESS CONFERENCE
SEAT IN LEAGUE COUNCIL. LORD BURNHAM HONOURED. GENEVA’S OFFICIAL RECOGNITION. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 3, 11.30 a.m. GENEVA, Sept. 2. Lord Burnliam was honoured with a seat in the League Council at the conclusion of the Press Conference.
Addressing the delegates Lord Burnham said that this honour constituted the League’s official recognition of the newspaper press as a national and international institution, which was ail indispensable part of the machinery of civilisation.
Lord Burnham alluded to the question •of the right to appropriate news and said he sincerely hoped that some common rule of justice might be established in the codes of all nations encouraging and not discouraging enterprise. Dr. Stresseman emphasised tlie importance of the press and the great influence of the power of the press. Ho urged the League to energetically continue to work in the direction of the Press Conference recommendations. Sir Austen Chamberlain said that he was sure that the collaboration of tlie press in such a work would be of greater consequence than anything statesmen could do.—Australian and New Zealand cable.
