OBITUARY.

OLD SETTLER PASSES. After an illness extending over a treek, the death occurred yesterday, morning of Mr John McLachlan, a resident of this town of many years’ standing, Born in Rothesay, Bute, Scotland 84 years ago, the deceased gentleman came out to the Dominion 69 years ago, marrying in New Zealand. During practically the whole of his lengthy period of residence in the Dominion he lived in the Wellington province. Besides the widow, there are two sons—Messrs F. and J. McLachlan, both of Palmerston North •—to mourn his passing, and to them the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended. MR JOHN EDWARD GILLLESPIE. In the death yesterday morning of Mr John Edward Gillespie, of Palmerston North, there passed away_ a gentleman who ivas well-known in sporting circles. Born ir. Palmerston North, a son of the late Mr and Mrs John Gillespie, deceased was 45 years of age. For a number of years prior to the war he was in business in Foxton as a draper, selling out to go overseas. On returning to New Zealand he started farming on Gillespie’s Line, and was so engaged right up till the time of his death. He was the breeder of Master Strowan, Rowan and Evening Glow, three well-known performers on the racing track. Until a month, ago he had enjoyed good health. A widow is left to mourn his passing. There are five brothers —Messrs J. F. and P. Gillespie (Palmerston North), W. Gillespie (Dannevirke), A.. Gillespie (Wanganui), and R. Gillespie (Wellington) —and four sisters—Miss Elsie Gillespie and Mcsdames Jewell and Howarth (Palmerston North) and Mrs Brosnahan (Oamaru). The interment is to take place to-morrow. MAORI WAR VETERAN. A colonist of 70 years’ standing passed away yesterday in the person of Mr George Dodson. Born in Nova Scotia 86 years ago, deceased, when a lad of 12, migrated with his family to Australia, his father owning a sailing ship in which they took the timber for a house. Australia in those days was a fairly lawless country, and the young Nova Scotian witnessed, among other things, the hanging of bushrangers. However, it was not for long that the family remained there, coming to this Dominion when deceased was 14 and settling at Nelson. Removing to the North Island when a young man, the late Mr Dodson took part in the Maori War, serving in the Wanganui district. He came to Palmerston North 20 years ago, prior to which time had lived at Dannevirke and Waipukurau. He never married, and as far as is known his onlv relatives are sisters living at Nelson and Fendalton. Although for some years past he had been under medical treatment, he had not really been seriously ill until just prior to the end. The funeral will take place to-morrow. MRS ELLEN FRANCES DILLON. Early this week there passed away Mrs «Ellen Frances Dillon, wife of Mr F. J. Dillon, of Victoria Avenue. The deceased lady was 64 years of age and was born at Napier, being a daughter of the late Mr John Miller, customs officer in that town. She was married at Patangata, in the Hawke’s Bay province, and with her husband had lived in various parts of Wairarapa prior to coming' to this district 17 years ago. Besides her husband, 6he leaves a grown-up family of four— Messrs Owen Dillon( of Elms Hill (Hawke’s Bay) and Noel Dillon, of Tamumu (also Hawke’s Bay), the latter being a one-time Manawatu representative footballer, and Miss Winifred Dillon and Mrs Paddy., both of Palmerston North. There is also one brother, Mr R. C. Miller, who is residing near Gisborne.
