HOCKEY.
NEW ZEALAND TOURISTS. FINAL MATCH WON. SYDNEY. Aug. 31. In the final match in Australia the New Zealand hockey team, composed of Fletcher, L. Spiers, Soper, Mahoney, Morris, Hore, Worsfold, Seccombe, Bell, Watts ’and H. Spiers, defeated a Metropolitan eleven. Soon after the commencement of the game Bell scored, giving the New Zealanders the lead. Fletcher made a clever save from a strong Metropolitan attack kicking the ball from the goal to midfield. The New Zealanders immediately made a strong attack, forcing the game and strongly besieging the local goal, but they hit too hard to score. At half-time the scores were: New Zealand, 1 goal; Metropolitan, ml. In the second half the New Zealanders concerted their forces in a determined attack on the local goal and Seccombe and Watts scored a goal apiece. After a strong rally, Metropolitan carried the attack to the enemy stronghold and scored, making the total: New Zealand, 3 goals; Metropolitan, 1. Immediately after another strong local attack resulted in a further score. The last few minutes were strenuously contested, Metropolitan making desperate but unavailing efforts and the game ended: New Zealand, 3 goals; Metropolitan, 2.—A. and N.Z. cable. HASTINGS BEAT WELLINGTON. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Ang. 31. A large attendance witnessed the Hastings - Wellington representative hockey match to-day. Hastings won by 5 goals to 4. THE WINTER SHIELD. WIN FOR DANNEVIRKE. Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, Aug. 31. The Dannevirke men’s hockey representatives defeated a challenge for the Winter Shield against Feilding, defeating them by 4 goals to 1.
