CHIANG’S ARMY -RETREATING,

NANKING RESIDENTS’ FEARS,

SHANGHAI, Aug. 16.

General Chiang Kai-shek’s _ erstwhile army is retreating in disorder from all fronts and concentrating on Chin Kiang, a Yangste port 60 miles from Nanking, on the Nanking-Sliang-hai railway. Already 50,000 troops have arrived. Nanking residents are in a state of fear as to whether the city will be defended or left to the ravages of the undisciplined Southern forces.
