BILLIARDS.

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Per Press Association

. WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. The meeting between Hackett (Auckland) and Shanks (Wellington) in the New Zealand amateur billiards championship proved to bo a keen contest despite the fact that the disparity was large in the scores all through. The balls ran badly for Hackett and particularly badly at the finish when a kiss would spoil his run and the balls would line up, or he would lose the white, although these were occasionally weak shots. Both players played well and the luck went Shanks’s way, especially in a break of 61 which contained two consecutive flukes at 40.

Up to about 450 Shanks’s average was over ten, but ho slowed up considerably and finished up a little oyer 8. He made one nice break of 73, including nursery cannons and red ball play. Hackett’s best work was at tho top of the table. The final scores were —Shanks 666, Hackett 527. , The best breaks were: Shanks, 25, 26, 23, 28, 73, 25, 61, 24, 30, 35; Hackett, 21, 28, 29, 36, 27. Clark McCouachy, playing J. Besant, the Auckland professional, a friendly game of 500 on a 200 break made a break of 426 in 20 minutes timed by Mr Albert Cohen. This is believed to be a world’s record for quick scoring without nursery cannons. The previous best was 500 in 21 minutes which included nursery cannons, the quickest method of scoring. McConachy’s break was made wholly at the top of the table.
