MANAWATU COUNTY.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I was interested in Mr Schreiber’s letter re the Manawatu County Council’s circular letter to ratepayers. I am. of opinion that it is timo the ratepayers aroused themselves to administrative affairs in this county. The state of some of the roads or main highways has .been called attention to by motorists, ratepayers, automobile clubs and chambers of commerce. Take the chairman’s own riding; can he point to a worse portion of road or main highway between New Plymouth and Wellington? Is the Manawatu a poorer county than Horowhenua, Kairanga or Rangitikei, and yet these counties have carried out work which has won encomiums from visitors from all parts of the Dominion, while our county has been reviled for its somnolence. Your correspondent forgot or overlooked a paragraph in the chairman’s circular which stated that “our cost for maintenance compares favourably with the cost of other counties.” But can his county 6how a similar value for maintenance expenditure? Perhaps the chairman .will furnish details at the forthcoming meeting of ratepayers. In my opinion, sir, it would be more economical and satisfactory to allow the Highways Board to undertake the construction and maintenance work and let the County Council look after side roads. —I am, etc.,
