RONGOTEA. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) RONGOTEA, Aug. 15. The regular monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on August 11 when a full attendance of the committee was presided over by Mr W. J. Amies (chairman). The headmaster, Mr C. W. Liggiris, reported that good progress was being made by the pupils in their school work. Tho attendance had, however, been somewhat reduced during the month owing to the prevalence of sickness among the scholars. Ilis report further stated that the school had ..been visited by departmental officers, who had expressed themselves as being satisfied with the standard of efficiency shown by the pupils. On August 4 Arbor Day )rad been celebrated, when, under the supervision of Mr J. C. Glover, a local enthusiast in horticulture, a number of shrubs had been planted in the grounds. On the same day members of the committee had held a working bee to complete the carpentry work on the dressing room and shelter shed on the outer playing area. In this they had valuable assistance from Mr A. R. Ransom, an old boy visitor from Levin. The secretary reported that the shelter shed on the playing ground was completed with the exception of the painting which would be finished in the course of a few days. This building, which had been erected chiefly by voluntary labour, was a commodious structure and would serve a variety of purposes as provision had been made to reserve a large compartment which would be of great usefulness when picnics and other similar functions were being held. The room was provided with tables and facilities for boiling water in a large concrete copper, the frame of which was supplied flee of cost and to the donors the committee was very grateful. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Glover and Ransom and to the ladies who supplied afternoon tea on Arbor Day. The committee were pleased to learn that the board had acceded to the request to appoint an addition to the teaching staff, Miss F. Rose having been re-instated to her former position as assistant teacher. Mr • If. J. 'Ransom presented the school with an ancient Maori axe and a chisel. This gift, which is a valuable addition to the small school collection of curios, was received with thanks and the suggestion was made that similar contributions from parents and residents would be very acceptable.
• Notification was also received that the Tourist Department bad promised to donate two handsome shields, each containing six coloured photographs of New Zealand scenery on condition that they be suitably framed and placed on tho walls of the school rooms. This gift was also accepted with thanks. It was decided to protect the shrubs in the horse paddock by erecting a fence to take in tho triangular piece of ground round the creek in the corner by the sale yard and front noad fence. It was also decided to write to the Town Board asking that property owners below the school grounds who have not already done to, be requested to clean out tho water courses so as to prevent water from backing up in tho school ground. Accounts to the value of £2l were passed for payment. FUNERAL OF MR BECKMANN. The funeral of tho late respected Mr J. Beckmann took place on Sunday afternoon. Following on an appropriate service conducted by Rev. Father Harnett in tho Catholic Church, the iicarsc departed for the Rongotea Cemetery, to be followed by a lengthy line of cars. On arrival at the cemetery another short ‘ service was conducted by Rev. Father Harnett after which [ the casket was lowered and the body laid | to rest beside that of deceased’s wife who predeceased him some 10 years previously. Numerous beautiful floral tributes were placed on the grave by his largo circle of friends. The pall bearers were Messrs C. Parrant (sqn-in-law), of Petone, Amil Beck. (also son-in-law), of Petone, ■ Atnie Beckmann (son), of Wairoa, and J. Leen, J. Goodwin and J. Robinson (friends of deceased). The Jate Mr Beckmann was entirely reI sponsible for tho upkeep of the Catholic Church'grounds which ho kept in excellent order devoting a considerable amount of j time and labour in ttds direction, which ! fact was evidenced by the very neat order- 1 ly appearance of the church grounds. FORMATION OF SOCIAL CLUB. On Friday ovening a meeting of those interested in the formation of a Social Ciub was held in tho Masonic I-lall supper room ,when ■ the attendance was very satisfactory. Mr IV. J. Amies, convener of j tlie meeting was appointed to the chair, j Tho chairman, in addressing the meeting, ; said that ho had been approached by some •of the ' citizens, who bad suggested tho i formation of a social ciub, hence his rea- ; soil for calling- tho meeting. In outlining j the object of the club lie said that it was • ait intended to run it to make money as j the only funds which would be required ! would be to pay for the hiro of tho supi per room and to purchase tho prizes for j the various tournaments. Other than for | the afore-mentioned items no money was ! requided except to pay for sundry ex- | penses. He went on' to say that tliero i would be an opportunity for thoso interested to put in an evening at the club where cards and draughts, etc., could be played. t Apologies for absence were received from j Messrs O’Leary Bentley, Wood, Tronkner (3), Ransom, Wright and many other intimating to the chairman their inability to attend, the meeting and stating that they would join if a club was started. It was decided that a club to be called tho Rongotea and District Social Club bo formed, the frequency of the meetings to be weekly. It was also decided that the night of the meetings be every Thursday. It was resolved that all present at tho meeting constitute the committee (with power to add). Those present were Mesdamea Buchanan,, Amies Bower and Miss McCall, Messrs Aird, Baylis, Buchanan, Amies, Bower, McCall, Bree and Rose. Tlie membership fee was fixed at 2s 6d. Mr C. A. L. McCall was appointed to tho position of secretary. It was left in the hands of the secretary to'purchase 12 packs of playing cards. It was decided that a small admission charge be made for gentlemen and tho ladies to bring baskets. Frizes were given for tho opening meeting of the club to be held next Thursday by Messrs Aird (box of chocolates), Baylis (pair of slippers).
SHANNON NOTES'. SHANNON DAIRY COMPANY. (From Our Own Correspondent,) SHANNON, Aug. 15. The annual meeting of the shareholders of the Shannon Dairy Coy. was held last Saturday, there being an attendance of 35 shareholders. The directors’ report, which
was adopted, -referred to the fact that the payment for the year was 2jd less than for the previous year, but no doubt compared favourably with other dairy companies throughout New Zealand. During the year 762 tons 14cwt 3qrs 541bs of butter was manufactured, an increase on the previous year of 21 tons. The average monthly payment to suppliers was Is 2.95 d. Provision ' was made on the balance-sheet for a further' payment of 2d per lb on the season, the total average for the year being Is 4.95 d. The average grade was 93.82. Tho .two rotiring directors, jVlessrs R. W. Taylor and W. E. Barber, were re-elected. VALEDICTORY. Mr C. Perry, who has been on the staff of Messrs A. and L. Soifort for the past 2j years, was farcwelled last Thursday evening by the firm and employees. The evening took the form of a banquet and Mr 11. Seifert, on behalf of the firm, presented Mr Perry with a gold fountain pen and a case of pipes. In doing so Mr Seifert referred to the active parts taken by Mr Perry in fostering the Mirauni Sports Clubs and the interest he had always taken in tho firm’s concerns. Mr Perry in returning thanks said he wa6 sorry to bo leaving, but ho would always take a keen interest in tho company, and the Mirauni Sporting Clubs. Other toasts honoured were Mirauni Ltd, proposed by Mr J. T. Bovis, reply by Mr H. Seifert; Miranui Sports Clubs, pro-
posed by Mr R. Priest, roply by Mr J. Robson; visitore proposed by Mr J. Caldwell, reply by Mr Aitken (Dunedin). WEDDING BELLS. Tho marriage of Margery, only daughter of Mr and Mrs James Richardson, of Shannon, to Gordon, second son of Mr and Mrs McSavney, also of Shannon, was solemnised last Wednesday afternoon in the Ven Bede’s Church, by Rev. Mr Farrell. The church, which was prettily decorated for tho occasion, was crowdod with friends, The brido was daintily attired in a petalled frock of soft white satin, over a flounced slip of silver lace and georgette. She wore an embroidered tulle veil with coronet of pearls and orange blossoms. She was attended by her twin cousins, tho Messes Alison and Audrey Pees, of Palmerston North, as bridesmaids, who ivore petalled frocks of pale pink and pale blue taffeta respectively with head bands of tulle and tinted loaves to match. Little Rona and Lois Easton, of Buckley, twin nieces of the bridegroom, acted as flower | girls, wearing petalled frocks of mauve I taffeta and headbands of gold leaves. Each bridesmaid and flower girl wore a handsome string of pearls, the gift of the bridegroom. Mr I/auric Richardson acted as best man with Mr Frank Jamieson as groomsman. The bouquets carried by the bride and her ma'ds were much admired. After the ceremony Mr and Mrs Richardson entertained their guests at a sumptuous repast in tho Parish Hall where tho usual toasts were honoured. Later Mr and Mrs McSavney left by car for their honeymoon carrying with them the good wishes of their many friends. Mrs McSavney travelled in a tailored tweed costume, with fur choker and hat to match. The winners at the Bowling cribbagc tourney were: Mrs Merwood and Mr Laurie Richardson. • Mr and Mrs C. Logan, of Nor6owood, are visitors to Shannon at present, staying with Mrs Logan’s parents, Mr and Mrs Webster. Shannon juniors beat Weraroa by 7 points to nil at Shannon on Saturday. The many friends of Mrs R. Hayes will regret to hear that last night she was taken to the Palmerston North Hospital. Miss F. Croon, of M»anui, who was cpr<i veyed to the Palmerston North Hospital last Thursday, is reported to bo making satisfactory progress. The Minister of Internal Affairs has advised tho Buckley Drainage Board that, after fully considering the whole question relative to the proposed alteration of I boundaries, tho Minister has decided to make the alteration of boundaries prayed for in the recent petition, that is to say tho Aratangata drain as well as tho lands i prayed for will be excluded from the j drainage district. He adds that it had | boon hoped that it would bo possible to I como to an amicable agreement coneern- ! ing tlie drain, and that was the reason for i the recent correspondence on the subject. TANGHViOANA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TAN GIM OAN A, Aug. 15. A meeting of the Tangimoana Improvement Society was hold on Saturday evening When there were present Mr J.
