BILLIARDS
AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. E. J. Morrison (Auckland) liad a hard row to hoe when he met A. Freeman (Wellington) in the amateur billard championship on Saturday. Freeman, purely, a stroke player, had all the run of the luck, and missed little. Morrison struggled against adversity, and made up arrears and went neck and neck .till near 500. Freeman left the balls safe. Morrison instead of being cautious, played risky shots such as long screw losers almost on the cushion, leaving good positions from which Freeman scored freely, and in the last stage put on 180 while Morrison scored 46. ■'
Freeman’s average was 8.8, his best breaks being 30, 42, 27, 41, 25, 61. Moirison’s best were: 41, 27, 34, 29, 30, 33, 30. In the evening Tucker" (Federal) met Fowke, a young Wellington player with a nice touch and real skill, but lacking experience. He will do well. Tucker,- a seasoned championship player, won easily, the scores being: Tucker 666, Fowke 376 (average 8.7.) Warren and Roberts, each three times champion, will play on Monday night.
