BIG CROWDS ATTEND.

SPLENDID BIRDS IN UTILITY CLASSES. BALANCE OF PRIZE AWARDS. Throughout yesterday aftornoon and evening largo crowds attended the Manawatu Poultry Association’s annual show, and much eulogistic comment wns passed concerning tho quality of the birds exhibited and tho general arrangements. JUDGES’ COMMENTS. “As a whole, tho Game birds 'were tho best yet exhibited in Palmerston North,” stated Mr O. Anderson, judge of the Game section. “Right through my classes, willi the exception of the spangled pullets, the quality was better than 1 have 60 far seen here. The best class was tlio spangled cocks, tho bird that won tho championship being especially fine.” Mr S. Johnson, the judge of the other fancy bird classes, commented that the Minorcas had been a poor lot. In the American White Leghorns, however, there were some nice birds, especially a cockerel which was the finest he had seen for years, but which he had had to place second on account of its having been shown in a poor condition. Nothing outstanding had heon forthcoming in the Hamburg classes, but tho Orpingtons were better than those ho had judged here two years ago, especially tho males. In the Wyandotte classes, apart from the winners, there was nothing outstanding, but there had been some fine barred rocks exhibited. In tho latter section ho considered it a pity that the committee could not see its way to either divide the colours or to have a more distinct typo. It was undoubted that the birds exhibited in what should be tho English class were almost pure American Rocks, and this made it a very difficult matter for the judge to even satisfy himself as to which typo and colour be should place in the prize list. In the other variety classes, the Campines, White Rocks, Rhode Island Reds and Light Sussex, a mediocre lot of birds was exhibited. It was difficult in the latter clas, he concluded, to find that which was fairly representative of the breed. “Tho classes I judged,” stated Mr J. Nixon, who officiated in the utility section, “exceeded anything to my knowledge here beforo, both as regards quality and quantity. Some of the best Orpingtons in New Zealand were exhibited, the male pairs being especially fine. Tho Leghorns were a very strong section; there were 21 pullets in ono class and 19 cockerels in another. Rhode Island Reds wore fairly well up in numbers and in quality, while the Silver Wyandotte pullets were a good class.” Mr A. Richards, judge of tho pheasants, geese and turkeys, commented that there had been little competition in his classes. Tho winning pair in the class for Lady Aynhurst pheasants had been good birds, especially the hen.
