THE RUSSIAN TERROR.
A FINNISH PROTEST. HELSINGFORS, June 14. Cabinet has sent a protest to Moscow against the execution ot' Elvengreen, and demanding an explanation. A. anil N.Z. cable. Elvengren was one of the 20 reported last week to have been shot. He was an ex-cavalry officer, and was alleged to have participated in the organisation of an attempt on the Soviet delegation at the Genoa Conference, headed by Tchitclierin, hen the delegation passed through Berlin. TRIAL AT ODESSA. PARIS, June 13. An Odessa message reports the trial of 16 persons charged with espionage on behalf of Roumania, of whom 11 were condemned to death, truce to iniprisonment for ten years, and two were acquitted. Those condemned were also accused of illegally conveying persons to Roumania who were escaping from Russia.—Sydney Sun cable. PASSPORTS REFUSED. LONDON, June 14. The Government has refused passports to six working-class children due to depart for Russia as guests of the Moscow Congress for Young Pioneers. — A. and N.Z. cable. TERRIBLE TORTURE. CHAINED TO A CORPSE. Received June 15, 9.40 a.m. HELSINGFORS, June 14. [t is reported that Elvengren was executed some time ago after, terrible torture by the clieka, culminating in his being taken from prison where he was chained to a corpse that was left for five days. He lost his reason and was executed wliilo insane.—A. and N.Z. cable.
