(From Our Own Correspondent.) TOKOMARU, Juno 14. Mr Leslio Rowlands, of Gisborne, is spending a fortnight’s holiday here. Mr Ernest G. Webb, son of Mr J. Webb, a former headmaster at tho local school, received his diploma as bachelor of laws as a graduate of Victoria College, Wellington, on Friday afternoon last. Unfavourable comment has been mado on the misleading sign-post, “Tokomaru South Road,” opposite tho blacksmith’s shop, whereby many curs have been observed to tako the wrong road. Tho monthly meeting of tho School Committee was held on Monday evening. Those present wqro Messrs R. W. Guy (chairman), J. D. IVlcCluro (secretary), E. Titcombo, G. Voss nnd J. Schwass. Mr J. R. Kelly was unable to bo present owing to a serious accident sustained on Saturday evening. A grant of £l3 5s from tho Education Board for incidental expertises was acknowledged, and accounts for £1 Is 5d parsed for payment. Tho matter of tho incinerator was again brought forward, but having had no communication from Mr Print who put in a tender, it was deferred sending further communication on tho subject. It was arranged that Friday next bo a school holiday for tho Palmerston North Show. Tho committee voiced a protest in connection with tho state of Sclnvass’s Road in front of tho school, Mr MeCluro being instructed to write to tho County Council on tho matter. It was also mentioned that a footpath from tho goto to the corner would bo appreciated. The basket-ball appurtenances are also to bo procured. Mr G. Voss moved that tho committee commenco the series of euchre and dance evenings. This was seconded by Mr J. Schwass. A meeting to arrange for theso entertainments is to be hold on Tuesday next. Tho headmaster, Mr D. Forsyth, reported that tho roll number after the holidays was 127. Last week it was 110 and the previous week 119. The falling off in the attendance ho attributed to weather conditions. Ho also reported a few cases of mumps.

OROUA DOWNS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OROUA DOWNS, June 14. Tho bachelors of the district held their annual ball on Thursday evening last. It was decidedly a most successful function, and the young gentleman are to bo congratulated on arranging everything so satisfactorily. Helped by the ladies, the needs of everyone wore easily fulfilled. The hall was prettily decorated for the occasion and a sumptuous supper was provided. Tho danco music was supplied by a professional orchestra, Messrs N. Burling, Millard and Raine relieving with extras. Mr D. Funnell acted as hon. secretary. Saturday was a gala day on the sportsground which was thronged with spectators to witness the seven aside Rugby tournaments. Although, following the heavy downpour the ground was extremely wet and heavy, that in no way marred the sport or enthusiasm. Play was brilliant throughout, and Oroua Downs senior and juniors teams wero successful in securing victories. The ladies served a. wolcomo tea on tho field which was much appreciated. In tho evening a sports danco was held when a good number thoroughly enjoyed celebrating tho end of a successfully day. Mcsdamcs Scott, Misses Moff'att and McKenzie and Messrs Burling and Millard supplied music for the evening.
