POULTRY SHOW

A FINE EXHIBITION. DEPARTMENT’S INSTRUCTIVE EXHIBIT. Situated this year in No. 5 Hall, a much more commodious structure than that used previously, the Manawatu Poultry Association’s annual show was opened this afternoon. Many IV intei Show visitors attended, and much favourable comment was heard concerning both the exhibits and the general lay ■ out. With the greater space at its disposal, the association has this year been able to present a much more attractive display, tho birds being all on the one level because of the elimination of the double tiers. Entries, generally, are well up to those of last year.. Canaries, of which there are 67 more exhibited this show than last, furnish a very fine class—probably the best that lias ever been benched in New Zealand. The poultry, as a whole, are very good, the Black Orpingtons being numerically tho strongest. In the fancy section Mrs Wilson, of Hastings, and Mr Sowman, of Blenheim, are exhibiting,_ as in the past, some high quality birds. The Game section is well patronised, there being competed for in this series the North Island championship.. In several other classes, too, championships account for good entries. On view at the end of the hall is tho association’s collection of trophies —a formidable array—including the Jarvis Memorial Bowl, commemorating the late Mr John Jarvis, of Palmerston North, a man who did so much in the interests of the poultry industry. This year, for the first time, the Department of Agriculture has an exhibit in connection with the show. The object of the display, Mr F. C. Brown, chief poultry instructor for tho department, told a “Standard” reporter, is wholly to instruct and educate. On the walls are hung plates illustrating the difference between good layers and bad layers and stressing the need for culling out the non-paying birds. Other pictorial representations show the standard types of birds, on which all utility classes throughout the Dominion are judged. Interesting models are displayed of the best types of houses and of many appurtenances which are needed in the successful raising of poultry. To those unfamiliar with the different changes that go on during the incubation of the egg, the plates exhibited will be found most instructive. Also of interest is a collection of photographs dealing with . diseases among flocks, a detailed description of the remedial treatment being given in each case.

The fixture was officially opened by Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.. who stated that it was gratifying to find that Palmerston North could stage one oi the biggest poultry shows that had yet been held in New Zealand. The exhibition of canaries was the largest and best so Tar benched in any part of the Dominion, and he was confident that it would appeal very much to the public. In recent years rapid strides had been made by the Manawatu Poultry Association, who, in Mr W. Gray, had a worthy representative on the Manawatu A: and P. Association. To Mr Gray and the committee associated with him the A. and P. Association was greatlv indebted. Cheers were then given, on Dir Nash’s call, for the officials of the Poultry Association. Results of judging are as follow:
