RAILWAY ACCIDENTS.
FATALITY IN THE NORTH. DEATH OF A GUARD. Per Press Association. WHANGAREI, May 3. F. Roberts, the guard of the early train from Mniingaturoto to Whangarei, was killed during shunting operations at Paparoa this morning. Deceased was a single man whose home is in Wellington.
DISTRESSING OCCURRENCE. BOTH LEGS SEVERED. Per Press Association. TAUMARUNUI, May 3. A distressing accident occurred at eight o’clock this morning at the railway coal dump just north of the Rangaroa level crossing when Walter F. England, an engine driver, aged 37, of Te Kuiti, a married man with a largo family, had both legs severed at the ankle. The engine wag coaling at the time at the dump and England was standing on the coal heap beside the train. He gave the fireman the signal to move on and as the train moved slipped and roll beneath the wheels. The injured man was taken to hospital.
