SHANNON. [From Our Own Correspondent.] SHANNON, May 2. There was little football from a spectators’ point of view in the Miranui-Hui Mai junior match played on tho Domain on Saturday. Hui Mai arrived on the ground with 12 men, but managed to secure a thirteenth player before tho game commenced, playing throughout witli two men short. Miranui won- by 17 points to nil. Mr R. Sands had control of the game. Shannon seniors played Hui Mai at Manakau, suffering defeat by 20 points to 12. Mrs J. V. Burns lias tendered her resignation from tho teaching staff of the local school as from May 30, The school committee in accepting the resignation with regret, resolved to forward her a letter of appreciation of her services, and of the fact of making the period prior to the date of resignation of sufficient length to enable a successor to be appointed before the resignation took effect. On Saturday evening some ladies interested in tho Women’s Institute movement met to discu.ss the advisability of holding a street stall with a view to forming the nuclehs of a piano fund. It has been found possible to secure a very suitable room —at a low rental —for the monthly meetings, but without a piano, and as such an instrument helps considerably towards the social side of institute life, the members thought the effort to procure one second-hand might bo well worth while. It was decided to hold a stall on Saturday next, and promises of cakes, produce and valuable articles for competition were given, while all members and those interested are to bo asked for their help. Th 6 1 committee is aiming at putting the institute on a firm footing as soon as possible, with j the hope of, at a not too distant date, being able to import lecturers and demonstrators of various branches of handicraft, thus fulfilling one of the most important functions of an institute. RONGOTEA. PLUNKET SOCIETY. (Special to “Standard.”) RONGOTEA, May 2. The annual report of the Plunket Society to be presented at the annual meeting of the focal branch on Wednesday is as follows :—“ln accordance with tho wish of the parent branch we havo changed the, time of our annual meeting to March 31, so that this report covers a period of six mqntlis for the last one. In presenting tho report and balance-sheet for the period ending March 31, 1927, we have much pleasuro in stating that this branch has made steady progress and with a little moro practical help should be firmly established. In June last we purchased scales and they have proved a valuable asset. By kind permission of Mrs Davison a garden party wa? arranged to be held on her grounds on December 1, and our committeo worked well to fill a stall with saleable goods. Toys were aiso purchased for a Christmas tree. Unfortunately tho day turned out very wet, so wo set out our tea tables and furnished our stall in tho hall, but the attendance was very small. During December we applied for a grant from tho trustees of tho McCarthy fund, but 60 far have received no reply. A mothers’ social afternoon .was held at the school residence on February 23, but again the day was wet and only six mothers were able to attend. However a pleasant time was spent by those present and Mrs Caverhill and Nurse White gave short addresses. We have received with regret the resignation of four members of our committee, Mesdames Hunt, Malheson, McGee and Wright, all excepting Mrs Wright having left the district. We wish them success and happiness in their new homes. Since tho inception of this branch Mrs Hunt has been a most efficient secretary and she is sadly missed. Tho committee is pleased to report that at tho present time there are 20 babies under Plunket supervision and takes this opportunity of congratulating Nurses Hughes, Nicholson and Whilo for the excellent manner in which | they have carried out their duties Whilo i thanking- the public for past support, wo j earnestly appeal for a larger membership, j Our thanks aro especially due to the Roni gotea Town Board for tho free use of their j room for monthly meetings; to Mr Blaxland for providing free transit for tho nurse, and also to Mr Amey for offering tho same should occasion arise.”
