BUY A POPPY.

HELPING DESERVING CASES.

PUBLIC’S FREE RESPONSE. “Buy a poppy, sir?” was heard throughout the streets and the Square of Palmerston North to-day and the request seldom passed unheeded for, the obligation |o part with a shilling to aid the cquse of distressed returned soldiers, hai become a solemn one to most of the adult members of the community. Thus it happened that, wfherever one turned to-day, the familiar emblem bf remembrance decorated' the buttonholes of the passersby, a silent token of the war days now fortunately long passed and an indication that those who returned, but who have fared indifferently, in the struggle for existence, are not forgotten. Last year, particularly during the winter period, the local Returned Soldiers’ Association performed very valuable work in aiding distressed returned men and their dependants and today’s effort was entered upon in the hope that last year’s total would be exceeded. A large band of workers was 'early afield this morning and by noon a considerable portion of the supply of the scarlet poppies had been disposed of, with every indication that sales , would proceed. to a successful conclusion by the late afternoon. DUNEDIN COLLECTION. DUNEDIN, April 22. The annual Poppy Day appeal held in Dunedin to-day resulted in over £475 being raised. This sum does not include returns from suburban and country centres. It is also anticipated that the total will be considerably augmented by returns in the city yet to be handed in. The money will be used to provide’employment and relief fbr distressed workless ex-servicemen. The effect of unemployment and general tightness of the money market is reflected in* the sum, which, shows some reduction on last year’s total. ;AMOUNT AT WELLINGTON. A successful 6ale of poppies was held in Wellington yesterday from which it is anticipated that nearly £IOOO will be obtained.
