PRINCE AT WAR

EARL OF CAVAN’S'RESPONSIBILITY, WHAT KING SAID. BRISBANE, April 8. The Earl of Oavan told a story today of an interview with the King when the Earl was appointed to command the newly-formed Guards Division in 1915, with the Prince of Wales attached to the staff. The King, he said, laid down certain fundamental rules, saying to the Earl of Cavan, “I’m sending my eldest son with you. I want you to understand if he is killed or wounded when with you or your Chief of Staff I’ll accept the blow aB the luck of battle, and won’t hold you responsible. But if he is with any junior officer and harm befalls him, then I’ll hold you responsible.” ‘‘l told the Prince of Wales of His Majesty’s words, and the Prince played the game like the man he is, never going to the front except with me or a responsible officer. “The Prince had one narrow escape. It was at 4 o’clock in the morning after the Battle of Loos. We went round to see how far we had advanced. We left the car as shells were coming over, and took refuge in a ditch. Returning later we discovered the Oar blown to atoms and the chauffeur killed.”
