>; w POLO MATCH. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, April 21. The first match for the West Coast Polo Association’s Handicap Cup was played yesterday afternoon under very unfavourable conditions, when the display of polo was poor. The competing teams were t Parewanui (2 goals) and Feilding B (15) and, throughout the game, the visitors had complete charge and ran out the winners by 18 goals to the local team’s handicap. Goals were shot for the winners by R. Scott 4, G. Mcßeth 7, N. Short 4, and R. L. Levin 1. Mr D. H. S. Riddiford (Wairarapa) refereed. FUNERAL OF THE LATE MRS CARTHEW. A large number of friends and relations attended the funeral of the late Mayoress, Mrs W. E. Carthew, yesterday. afternoon. The cortege was a very long one and the large number of citizens who were present testified to the esteem in which the deceased lady was held. Rev. A. Mitchell officiated at the graveside and the pallhearers were the deputy Mayor, Mr. A. H. Sutton, the Mayor-elect, Mr. E. H. Fair, the town clerk, Mr. N. C.' Harding, borough engineer, Mr T. K. Hay ■ and Crs. McCorkindale, B. N. Sandilands and D. Pryde. Included in the gathering were many representatives of the bodies on which the late Mrs Carthew had held office or had been an interested worker. _ Among them were the Women’s National Reserve (Mesdames Sugden and Stalker), Tlunket Nurse Society, District Nurse Society, Salvation Army, Boy S.couts and many others. Mr. J. C. Riddell, of Wellington, a brother-in-law of deceased, was also present and Mr. G. Russell, Provincial Grand Master, Grand Lodge, Wellington, represented the Mansoic order. Numerous silent tokens of sympathy in the form of beautiful . wreaths were forwarded from a wide circle of friends. At the conclusion of the graveside ceremony a memorial service was held at the Methodist Church, a large attendance being present. In respect to the memory of the deceased lady, the shops in town were closed for an hour during the afternoon. PERSONAL. As the result of an injury which he received to his log some time ago, Mr. C. R. Silcock, of Feilding, was admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital where, on Monday, the limb was amputated. Mr. Silcock is reported to be progressing as well as can be expected. RUGBY FOOTBALL. OROUA SUB-UNION.

A special meeting of Oroua SubUnion was held at Kimbolton, Mr. J. Watt occupying the chair. The following nominations of teams were accepted:—Seniors: Waituna, Apiti, Rangiwahia and Kimbolton. Juniors: Waituna, Apiti, Kimbolton, Rangiwahia and Kiwitea. _ L. Jansen ■and V. McGlone, of the Kiwitea Club, were reinstated as juniors. Resolutions were passed as follow: (1). That in future the charge for admission to representative matches be mdn 2s, ladies free; (2) that insurance benefits be reduced by 33 1-3 per cent and levies reduced accordingly to 2s per player, placing the scheme on the same footing as in the -1924 season; (3) that nominations in the third grade competitions close on Saturday, May 7th, and that, in the event of any clubs not being able to raise a full team, sruch clubs be requested to forward a list of available players to the secretary with a view to amalgamating with other clubs; (4) that the primary schools competition committee meet the school teachers prior to the sub-union meeting on May 7tb; (5) that the delegates get in touch with prospective referees in their respective districts and advise the secretary

of those available; (6) that the competitions commence on Saturday, April 30 th. The following committees were appointed:—Fixtures: Messrs R. Richardson, A. E. Stackhouse and the secretary (re-elected); postponement, the president and Messrs A. E. Stackhouse and N. V. Shannon (re-elected); management, the president, and Messrs R. Richardson and N. V. Shannon (re-elected); primary schools competition, the president, and Messrs A. E. Stackhouse, N. V. Shannon, R. Martin and A. R. McNae (re-elecfed); referees appointment, the president, and Mr Richardson and the secretary; selectors,- the president, and Messrs A. Mediae and N. V. Shannon.
