AFTER THE STORM.
NEW SOUTH WALES FLOODS. ENORMOUS DAMAGE. TOWNSPEOPLE SHORT OF FOOD. SYDNEY, April 20. Reports from the country show that widespread floods are causing enormous damage. At Maitland the Hood waters are well over the South Maitland railway. Many houses are deserted and all low-lying country is submerged. The river is still rising. Before being driven from their homes, many residents of Cessnock nailed wardrobes, tables and other furniture high up on the walls, to prevent them swirling round the rooms when the flood entered, and thus minimised their losses.
Most of the telegraphic communications interrupted by the storm have now been restored, and traffic is practically norma}, except to a few centres where lines are still down.
The residents of Kurnell, which has been isolated since Monday, are now running short of food supplies, and efforts are being made to establish communication through dense ' roadless scrub country.—Press Association.
