MANAWATU CLUB’S TOURNAMENT. SLOAN MORPETH BEATEN. Play in the Manawatu Golf Club’o Easter tournament was continued in fine but windy weather yesterday afternoon, .both the championship and the Hokowhitu handicap being narrowed down to the corni-final stage. Concurrently there was played a medal handicap, won by ,7. FI Lawrence with a eoore of 84—12—72, R. Loftus and A. Retemeyer tying for second place, the former with 83--9 —74 and the latter with 86—12—74. The outstanding game of the day was that between W. L. Fitzherbert, tho local club captain, and Sloan Morpeth, the Hamilton player, in the second round of tho championship, the Manawatu exponent continuing hi* good form of tho morning to defeat the ex-amateur champion at tho 18th hole. Both his long game and his putting were excellent, and he received many congratulations. A. E. Ekstedt, the local champion and holder of the McHardy Cup,.. w#? not extended in beating R. W. Cur.?berworth in the second round of the championship, while A. Seifert, by beating M. C. Feuwicke, avenged the latter’s defeat of his nephew, L. Seifert,. jun., earlier in. the day. H. H. Hutchison did well in beating L. B. Rhodes four up and two to piny. In the second round of the handicap Cram had to give way to Christie, a more experienced player, while Arthur,, a recent arrival from Edinburgh, now attached to the Miramar Club, bent. R. G. Moore, the local player, on tho last green. B. Bendall, on the day, .proved too good for Stubbs, and Christensen, ofMarton, a player who .shows much promise, was easily able to account for Griffiths, of Napier. . In the play-off of Saturday niorn-i ling’s medal J. A. Cunningham won,' Sloan Morpeth not returning a card. The afternoon medal play-off saw J*. Seifert, jun., return a card of 77 net, I. H. Williams arid V; T. Prichard tying for second place with 78. FITZHERBERT’S GREAT GAME. In the match between Fitzherbert and Morpeth the local captain played with great confidence. At the first' hole he was 20 feet from the pin with' 'his second, and Morpeth about 10 feet away. The local player’s putt lipped the hole, Fitzherbert taking four and Morpeth five. At the second Morpeth 'laid his second six inches from the pm land holed in three, Fitzherbert talcing; four. All square. The next hole saw Morpeth put his second on the green, and, taking two putts, he holed in four. —Morpeth one up. The fourth was halved in three. At the next hole Fitzherbert’s third was '“one out of the bag,” stopping 10 feet from the pin. Both stopped on the bp of the hole. Fitzherbert won by five to six, Morpeth’s approach striking the bank and falling back. At Cliff View, t against the wind, both were about two feet from the pin in four, Fitzherbert holing the putt and Morpeth missing his.—Fitzherbert one up.

At the next hole Morpeth got a nice four, Fitzherbert taking five.—All square. At Monro’s Morpeth sliced his drive and Fitzherbert drove to within five yards of the green. Morpeth’s approach was rather strong; Fitzherbert laid his “dead” and holed in three.— Fitzherbert one up. At the short ninth the local player was about 20 yards from the pin, while Morpeth played his short and failed to hole his putt. Fitzherbert holed his, winning by three to four. Fitzherbert two up. The next hole saw the local ■captain short with his second, but he approached “dead” with his third,. Morpeth was on the green with his second, but, in addressing the putt, the ball rolled, thereby losing the stroke. —Fitzherbert three up. At Land’s End Morpeth was on the green in three. Fitzherbert was too strong with his approach and went through the green into the long grass, failing to lay “dead”- from his chip. Morpeth won four to six.—Fitzherbert two up. At Lagoon Hill, with indifferent tee shots, the hole was halved in four.— Fitzherbert two up. At Ti Tis Morpeth hit a long drive into the rough. Fitzherbert pulled his drive into the long grass. Morpeth finally won the hole in six.—Fitzherbert one up. At the 14th Morpeth laid his approach putt “dead’ ’and holed in four to Fitzherbert’s five.—All square. At the 15th the Hamilton/"player was on the putting green for a four. Fitzherbert, failing with Ins approach, made Morpeth ono up with three to play. The 16th saw Morpeth miss his drive for the first time. Fitzherbert got a fair ball and put his third “dead,” holing in four to Morpeth’s five.—All square. At the 17th both got good drives and were about 16 feet from the pin with their seconds, Fitzherbert laying Morpeth a stymie. The Hamilton player holed his return putt, the hole being halved in four.—All square. . Both obtained a fair drive against the wind at the 18th. Morpeth was about 30 yards short of the pin with his second, while Fitzherbert was just off the green. Morpeth approached about ten feet past tho pin, and Fitzherbert to within five feet. Morpeth missing his putt, Fitzherbert sank his and the match ended in his favour. Ono up. EASTER CHAMPIONSHIP. Results in the second round of the Easter championship were as follriw : W. L.
