COMING ELECTIONS

CANDIDATES IN THE FIELD. GOOD NOMINATIONS RECEIVED. KEEN INTEREST EVINCED. Nominations for tke Mayoralty, Borough Council and borough representatives on the Foxton and Wellington Harbour Boards, the Palmerston North Hospital Board and Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, closed with the town clerk (Mr J. R. Hardie) at noon today, the interest that is being taken in the elections being reflected in the number of candidates offering. For the Mayoralty there are three gentleiften in the field, but for the council the nominations fall well below anticipations, only 16 candidates offering themselves for election when it was thought that there would be between 20 and 30 in the' field. Two years ago there were 21 aspirants for council honours. THE MAYORALTY.

Two years ago Mr F. J. Nathan was the "only candidate for the Mayoralty and, accordingly, was elected unopposed. The candidates this year, with their nominators, are as follow : Arthur E. Bennett, nominated by Mrs K. Newson and Messrs G. H. Bennett, J. Hyland and R. Kirkpatrick. Robert Edwards, nominated by Messrs W. A. Kyle and R. H. lard.Archibald J. Graham, nominated by Messrs It. F. Durward and J. Hodgens. The nomination paper was also signed by the following: Mrs A. Coombs, C. H. Whitehead, J. M. Johnston, W. L. Fitzherbert, F. J. Oakley, F. Keesing, H. L. Young, Mrs Captain Trask and Mrs M. Aitchison. BOROUGH COUNCIL. Nominations' for the nine seats on the Borough Council are as follow John McLeod, nominated by Messrs G. H. Bennett and T. It. Hodder. -Thomas Andrew, nominated byMessrs L. A. Abraham and H. L. Young. Augustus Edward Mansford, nominated by Messrs J. A. Nash, M.P:, and P. S. Larcomb. Henry James Canton, nominated by Messrs C. H. Whitehead. J. A. Colquhoun and G. G. Hancox. Oscar Albert Jorgensen, nominated by Messrs W. B. Bodell and A. B. Dalziel. Francis Cornelius Allerby, nominated by Messrs P. T. Robinson and E. Sitting councillors offering their services again are Messrs Canton, Hodgens, Fitzherbert, Eliott and Low. Messrs Oram and McLeavey are not seeking re-election, while Messrs Graham and Edwards are contesting the Mayoralty. HOSPITAL BOARD. For the four vacancies on the Hospital Board, seven nominations have been received against five two years ago. The nominations are as follow': Constance P. Abraham, nominated by Messrs J. A. Nash and P. S. Larcomb. Frederick Pycroft, nominated by Messrs A. F. Gilmore and H. Sharman. John T. Follas, nominated by Messrs A. F. Gilmore and H. Sharman. W. F. Cutler, nominated by Messrs A. F. Gilmore and H. Sharman. F. C. Allerby, nominated by E. Lorenz and Mabel J. O’Donnell. J. A. Nash, nominated by Messrs L. H. Collinson and J.P. Innes. Frank Langstone, nominated by Messrs T. M. Hardy and T. C. Allerby. The sitting representatives are' Mrs Abraham and Messrs Nash, Pycroft and Follas. POWER BOARD. Three members are required for the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, for which office there are four nominations compared with five for last election. Those, nominated are : Joseph Hodgens, nominated by Messrs J. Savage and F. C. Allerby. Frank Langstone, nominated by Messrs T. M. Hardy and P. T. Robinson. J. A. Nash, nominated by Messrs L. H. Collinson and J. P. Innes. M: A. Eliott, nominated by Messrs J. Wallace and H. L. Young: Messrs Eliott, Nash and Hodgens are ‘the sitting representatives. WELLINGTON HARBOUR BOARD. For the Wellington Harbour Board, two vacancies, there are two nominations, those of the sitting members who will be declared elected unopposed. They are: Maurice Cohen, nominated by Messrs H. F. Gibbons and IT H. Collinson. J. G. Cobbe, nominated by Messrs A. J. Geary and C. S. Jeffs. FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD. For the Foxton Harbour Board, the jiresent district member (Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.) is the only nominee. He wms nominated by Messrs L. H. Collinson and J. P. Innes. NO HALF-HOLIDAY ISSUE. • The elections will take place on April 27. A feature this year is the absence of a poll on the half-holiday question, na petition for this having been received. “Apparently the business people are satsified with the position,” commented Mr Hardie to v a “Standard” reporter.
