ADOPTED CHILD

ORDER FOR MAINTENANCE

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 6. Rosa Firth proceeded against George William Wood, a butcher, in the Supreme Court, seeking an order of £1 per week maintenance in respect to an adopted child. A decree absolute was made in September, since which both parties have remarried. Mr Justice MacGregor said that the court had given the custody of the child to the petitioner. He was satisfied that respondent had a legal responsibility, although the other husband would be liable if the child . became destitute. It had been submitted that petitioner and her husband were in such a good financial position that no order should be made against respondent who, it was said, was not in a position to pay. Respondent was doing good business and could evidently afford to pay £1 per week. Petitioner’s husband was unable to work and the two were not in a wealthy position. The order asked for was made as from January 1.
