RUSSIAN JEWELS.

FINE COLLECTION OF GEMS. SALE HELD IN LONDON. Received March 17, 11.45 a.m. LONDONr March 16. The surprising total of £80,561 was obtained from the sale of the Russian State jewels, which were described as the rarest collection of gems ever brought to an auction room. They mostly date from the 18th century and therefore belong to the period removed from the late reigning family though the nuptial crown was used more recently in ceremonial functions. There was a terrific rush, mostly of women. After spirited bidding the crown went to a Paris buyer for £6IOO, the bidding opening at £SOOO. Less important lots grouped together brought £BOOO. Other prices were as follow : —-Pair of diamond bracelets, £3400; diamond necklace, £2700'; green jasper snuffbox, £2600; emerald and brilliant ornament, £4300; large oval brilliant, £11,800; diamond, sapphires and pearl brooches, £7300; diamond tiara, £4200; court sword, £7OO.—A. and N.Z. cable.
