PROMPT ACTION.
SAFEGUARDING BRITISHERS. GOVERNMENT CONGRATULATED. Received March 17, 2.15. p.m. LONDON, March 16. In the House of Commons Sir A. E. Morrison-Bell moved -a resolution approving the Government’s foresight and prompt action to safeguard the lives of Britishers endangered by the civil war in China. Mr R. Mitchell Banks, in seconding, said the Labourites’ argument was that in every dispute with a foreign Power Britain was always wrong. When there was a dispute between two groups of foreigners the Labourites backed those most hostile to Britain. In the Indian mutiny they would have congratulated Nansdhib and protested against the relief of Lucknow. Mr Lloyd George said he was prepared* to support the Foreign Secretary in protecting British lives and property in Shanghai, but he deprecated a motion asking party capital out of the trouble in China. It was time enough to move votes of congratulations when the situation was cleared. The motion was carried by 241 to 116. —A. and N.Z. cable.
