BABY FOUND DEAD
HEAD CAUGHT IN COT. RAETIHI, March 14i The infant daughter of Mr H. J. Hodge, of Rangataua, met with her death under most distressing circumstances. The mother fed the child and put it in its cot at 3.60 p.m. on Thursday, and went on with her work. Ten minutes afterwards, on .going into the room, she found the child’s body and shoulders through a small opening in the end of the cot, and its head caught in the woodwork. She immediately summoned assistance and rang for a doctor, but when he arrived he could only pronounce life extinct. The father was communicated with at the time of .the accident, and arrived shortly after the occurrence. Artificial respiration was tried, but without avail. The parents had had the cot 12 years, and it had been used for their other children. A coroner’s inquiry , conducted by the district coroner, Mr W. H. Sandford, was held and a verdict was returned to the effect that the child met with its death through accident.
