FREE LABOUR.
RESPONSE AT WHAKATU.
Per Press Association
HASTINGS, March 16. Notwithstanding the short notice, ready response was made to the "Whakatu Freezing Works’ appeal for free labour last evening, and this morning the works were Carrying on with 35 volunteers and others were coming in during the day. The A. and P. Society’s autumn show just concluding prevented many from starting but these say that they will go on immediately after if required. A meeting of unionists and other departments at Whakatu held this morning resulted in all knocking off work at noon. The company says that there will be no trouble in filling the places vacant and it is anticipated that there will be no difficulty in carrying on with volunteers to the close of the season. The unionists are displaying no hostility and everything is quiet. The two other works are not affected.
