RAUMAI SCHOOL.
OPENED IN 1908. The Raumai School was opened on Auugst 10, 1908, with Mr G. D. Smith as teacher. There was then a roll of twenty, at which figure it remains today, The first committee comprised Messrs F. Matthews (chairman), R. L. Hall, T. Hall, D. McCarthy and A. Coombes (secretary), while that in office i to-day consists of Messrs W. Lucas (chairman), R. MacDonald, W. Howell, L. Edwards and J. Montgomery. Mr Smith relinquished the position of headmaster in December, 1919, and the present occupant of the office, Mr E. F. Thomas, took over at the beginning of the following year. In July, 1920, efforts were made to beautify the surroundings of the school, and hedges and shrubs were planted, lawns were laid down, the drive was asphalted and new gates and fences were erected. In 1922, the school was awarded an environment certificate. Since then the committee has left no stone unturned to maintain the beauty of the school, and, as always, has worked hard for anything in the interests of the institution. Two years ago the committee set about to raise funds for the purchase of a gramophone, and, largely due to the work of Mr and Mrs. R. MacDonald, the efforts were entirely successful, the money being raised by a children’s fancy dress dance. As chairman, Mr Lucas has been a tower of strength to the committee and has always been to the front in matters pertaining to the school’s welfare.
