THE JUBILEE

CELEBRATIONS NEXT WEEK. The first event in connection -with, the jubilee celebrations will t>e a Mayoral and council parade to a combined church service at the Opera House on Sunday at 3 o’clock. The combined church choirs have been practising the special anthems and hymns to be used in the service, the principal address at which will be delivered by Rev. M. A. Rugby Pratt, who leaves Palmerston North shortly for Christchurch. The festive proceedings -yeill be opened by the electric light sports at the Showgrounds on Monday, and a big attendance is anticipated. The queen election will close on Tuesday at 10.30 p.m., and, with such keen competition as has been witnessed since the nomination of the candidates, it is impossible at this stage to forecast the nominee on whom the mantle will fall. , A Queen’s Joyland has been instituted in George Street, located between the Palace and De Luxe Theatres. Here the various committees will take charge of games of skill. These were in full swing last night. Teller will be selling in the streets on Saturday of the Jubilee souvenir programme, containing a complete synopsis of every event run in conjunction with the celebrations. The organiser has made a good job of this and for the sum of one shilling one may know the time of any or every event during the week. The programme contains the photographs of the six queen candidates and other photographs with some valuable and instructive information concerning the history of the borough, and would be well worth sending away to friends at a distance or particularly' to onetime residents of Palmerston North.

All arrangements have now been completed for the procession on Wednesday, and this promises to be a most elaborate affair—one that. will not readily be forgotten. The decorated cars promise to be most spectacular, and special prizes from various motor car proprietors are being offered to encourage the decorator to do his best. Messrs Collinson and Cunningliame, Ltd., are putting on a very fine exhibit, while Miss McKenzie Forbes's senior pupils are staging a tableau entitled “Brittania’s Call to Arms,” in which the young ladies will be dressed to represent the various countries. To-morrow the Manawatu Tennis Association will conduct a Yankee tournament for mixed doubles at the Linton Street courts commencing at 2 o’clock, to assist Miss Seifert in her candidature. Players from all clubs are invited to participate. The Queen events for to-night include an electric light garden party at the residence of the Mayoress at 163 College Street. Dancing on the lawn to good orchestral music find several games with prizes for the successful competitor are amongst the amusements.

In the Empire Hall the Scottish Society will hold an ingleside on behalf of the Queen of Scots’ funds. The children’s fancy dress dance at the Zealandia Hall should be well patronised by both parents and children as the prices are down to zero and afford any who have fancy costumes the opportunity to get them out for an airing preliminary to the Jubilee occasions next week. An excellent orchestra has been engaged to play the dance music, and Mrs R. T. Jaggard has consented to judge the costumes. The Boy Scouts are holding a dance and euchre tournament in the West End School to-night.

The Pipe Band is travelling to Bainesse by conveyance leaving at 7 o’clock to put on a concert and dance there. Thero will be room on the bus for supporters. A cabaret will be run to-morrow night in the Zealandia Hall. Several dance novelties will be introduced, and a proper carnival spirit appears likely to bo in evidence.
