MENTAL DEFECTIVES
SEVERAL REFORMS. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Feb. 4. The National Council of Women approached the Minister of Health today asking him to carry out the recommendations of tho mental defectives commission.
Tho Minister said that certain of the recommendations already were in force, but tho matter was so delicate that tho department did not advertise the actions. A sum of £SOO had been granted annually to tho chief hospital boards for mental clinics at hospitals. He intended to push the claim that accommodation for mental patients bo provided at hospitals before their despatch to a mental institution, instead of detention in a police station. A borderland institution would bo opened shortly at Wellington.
