THE ROYAL VISIT.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Referring to the arrangements made for the coming visit to Palmerston North of Their Royal Highnesses tho Duke and Duchess of York: In your report of tho council’s meeting this week the Alayor states that lie is not making it mandatory for business to close. I would like to ask why ho is not doing so. I venture to say that this will bo the only town in New Zealand whore ;he shops will remain open, which will be an insult to our Royal visitors. The Alayor and Councillors must have a gift of humour in ordering tho shops to close immediately they leave. Surely, sir, it would be more courteous, not mentioning more patriotic, to close until 10.15 and then re-open until tho usual closing hour, 12.30. There would be more business about then any way. Tbe stalls would have ample time after 12.30 to attend the jubilee celebrations. As for the existing arrangements being designed for the children’s benefit, 1 fail to see how it can affect them, as I presume the schools will bo closed all day.—l am, etc., 11. J. HUNTER. February 2, 1927.
