WOMAN NEARLY DROWNED. EXCITEMENT AT SUMNER. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 5. A thrilling rescue from tho surf took place at Sumner this morning when Mrs Nicholson, wife of tho Mayor, while bathing was washed out by an undertow. Several attempts at rescue failed until John Brown, a storekeeper, dashed in fully clothed even to the extent of his apron and carried a life line to the woman who was later brought ashore with the aid of a dinghy, exhausted.
