MANAWATU v.’SOUTH HAWICE’S BAY. FREE SCORING GAME. A return cricket match between Manawatu and Southern Hawke’s Bay was played at Dannevirke on Saturday, when a free scoring game saw the honours again rest with Manawatu by one wicket and 41 runs. Taking first strike Southern Hawke’s Bay opened auspiciously, 31 runs being registered before a separation was effected, while the succeeding partnership added a half century. Three of the later batsmen also contributed very useful figures and when the final wicket fell the telegraph was registering eight runs beyond the second century. Grant, one of the tail, emerged with 47 to his credit, while Stephens had 36 and McKinnon 30. Gallichan proved to be Manawatu’s most successful trundler with four wickets for 39 runs, while Ongley gained three at a cost of 70 runs. Manawatu opened with Norris and Mullins and the pair had contributed 38 before the latter batsman went at 22. Gallichan failed to stay, but each succeeding batsman contributed useful totals and a fighting innings by Young in the closing stages enabled Manawatu to wrest the lead, time being called at the fall of the ninth wicket with 249 runs on the hoard. Peake) was notified this afternoon by cablegram that the following team would represent the Melbourne Cricket Club on its tour of the Dominion, the team leaving by the Marama on January 28:—W. W. The day’s play in the WellingtonAuckland Plunket Shield match was full of interest. In reply to Wellington’s score of 182, Auckland made 307, Dacre scoring 57 and Gillespie 50. Facing a deficit of 125 runs, Wellington opened their second innings disastrously, two wickets being down for three runs. Then the "Wellington batsmen settled doyn and Kortlang and Lowry, by excellent batting, carried the score to 173, Kortlang making 58 while Lowry is 98 not out.
