RACING CARNIVAL

SEATOWN WINS AT AUCKLAND

STAKES WON BY AGRION

RESULTS FROM ALL QUARTERS

The holiday racing carnival was practically concluded yesterday when indifferent conditions prevailed in the North Island. The opening day of the Southland Racing Club and the concluding days of the Wairarapa and Westland Clubs and the Canterbury Park Trotting Club enjoyed increases in the totalisator returns, otherwise the clubs holding fixtures suffered decreases. The Grandstand Handicap at Auckland was won by Seatown, while the Stakes fell to Agrion. Penman won the principal event at Wairarapa and Set Sail the Invercargill Cup.

MARTON RACES,

BIG CROWD AND BIG FIELDS

MERRY DAY’S SURPRISE VICTORY.

ROYAL DAMON WINS BIG SPRINT.

Very pleasant conditions prevailed during the early portion of yesterday i -vhen the concluding day of the Marton . Jockey Club’s summer meeting was | held at Foilding, but a cold wind with ' light rain sprang up in tiro late afternoon, making matters somowhat unpleasant for patrons. An excellent crowd was again in attendance, and the fields being of greater dimensions than oil the opening day, betting activities were comparatively brisk, the totalisator handling the total of £27,954 for tho day as compared with £34,047 last year which made a grand total of £60,410 for the two days, a decrease of £14,183 for the meeting. As on tho first day, Glenross was sent out a firm favourite in tiro big flat event, but was again beaten out of a place, tho winner turning up in Merry Day, who was on her best behaviour, the southerner Fresco filling second berth for the second occasion at the meeting. The sprint honours again fell to Royal Damon, who narrowly accounted for a stable companion in Epistle, after a fast run race. Polar was another double winner at the fixture, the Gisborne representative, as on the opening day, accounting for tho opposition in the final event in comfortable fashion. Hereunder are results following the “Standard” going to press yesterday :

THE AMATEUR RIDERS. “ All six acceptors in tho Ladies’’ ■ Bracelet—the amateur riders', event — wont to the post, Kilburn, who had the services of tho well-known amateur horseman, Mr J. Morris, being elected a firm favourite, the Kilbronev gelding being entrusted with 1030 tickets, Brigadier Bill, the second elect, having 634, and Hallowmorn 596. Brigadier Bill and Bonny Rill were first away, but before tho turn going away from homo had been reached Paraki had assumed command to load right round to tho turn for home wliero Kilburn i worked up alongside with Brigadier Bill, Everest and Hallowmorn next. I Brigadier Bill lodged a strong challengo and, together with Kilburn, 1 drew out and in a spirited finish 0 Brigadier Bill annexed tire honours by , half a length with Hallowmorn third ) three lengths back. Everest was 3 fourth and Paraki fifth. Time, 1.531

) ROYAL DAMON AGAIN. The withdrawal of Bank Note, Gold ' Box and Previous made tho Telegraph . Handicap a one dividend event, Royal , Damon, a winner of the opening day, being a £l6O better favourite than ' Mireusonta with Epistle, a stable cora--1 panion of Royal Damon’s, 260 tickets ■ further away. Epistle had the better , of tho despatch, but Mireusonta was quickly alongside on tile rails and the ; ■ pair raced together right to tho ■ straight entrance, Miss Hupana and ' Royal Damon being directly behind. 1 With heads straightened out, Royal j Damon went in pursuit of the leaders ’ and, Mireusonta compounding, the 1 stable mates were left to tho ’ issue, Royal Damon getting up to win c by a short nose with Mireusonta four lengths back. Time, 1.14 3-5. c

A NARROW VICTORY. Precious, S’omo Lad, Joyeuso and Hypnotic wore absentees from the Farewell Hack Handicap in which Horomea was a £2s6.better favourite than Te Koroke with a drop of 477 tickets to Ohui, the others being very little fancied. At the barrier rise Valplane jumped to the front from ' White Ringlet, Lady Cynthia, Ohui ’ and Te Koroke, the favourite and t Guadalquiver bringing up the rear. 1 White Ringlet was first into the < straight from Ohui, Volplane and To 1 Koroke with Horomea coming up fast, the last-named taking the lead half J way down the straight. To Koroke

came up in pursuit, but coidd not get closer than a head, Lady Cynthia being six lengths back in third place. Next to finish were White Ringlet, Volplane, Guadalquiver and Ohui. Time, 1.15.

POLAR TAKES FINAL EVENT. Red Bob was the sole absentee from the Turakina Handicap in which Great Hay, who was making his first appearanco in open company, was preferred to Polar, 184 tickets separating the pair on the machine with a drop of 400 to Gold Box. From a good despatch Brigadier Bill and Great Hay were the first to show out, the pair racing on terms along the back, just ahead of Panart, Gold Box, Polar and Kalakaua. Approaching the turn Polar was brought up on the outsido and was in the van at the straight entrance, Gold Box, Great Hay, Panart, Brigadier Bill and Kalakaua being next in order, although the last-named was moving up. Polar drew out and was never troubled to win by a good two lorfgths with Panart one and ahalf lengths ahead of Gold Box. Great Hay was fourth with Kalakaua next. Time, 1.29.
