Mr «T. F. Mackley, locomotive engineer at the Auckland railway station, is at present visiting Palmerston North on departmental business. Mr W. H. Tingey, of the firm of R. E. Tingey and Coy., Ltd., Wellington, has taken up his residence in Palmerston North. Sir James Rose limes lias resigned the Chief Justiceship and Sir William Solomon has been appointed to succeed him, states a cable message from Capetown. A London cable states that Sir H. M. Trenchard has been promoted and becomes first Air Marshal. This rank corresponds with Admiral of .the Fleet and Field-Marshal. Mr Leonard Biggs, former chief of staff, ha 3 been appointed editor of the Melbourne Age, in succession to the late Mr G. Schuler, states a Press Association message. Mr T. Taylor, of Wairarapa, who has been on a visit to Palmerston North during the Christmas and New Year holidays as the guest of Mr and Mrs H. Fowler, returned to Masterton today. The Australian cricketers, W. A. Oldfield and J. M. Taylor, are passengers to Sydney on the Aorangi, which arrived at Auckland yesterday. They left the remainder of the team in the United States and have been spending some weeks at Honolulu. Mr C. G. Swallow left on Saturday for Auckland where he will attend the booksellers’ conference to be held in that centre. Mr Swallow who is accompanied by Mrs Swallow, will spend a fortnight’s holiday at Waiheke at the conclusion of the conference. Mr A. K. Harris, of Wellington, who was at one time district traffic manager at Wanganui, and is now supervisor of transportation for the Railway Department, has undergone an operation following a serious indisposition. Mr Harris recently expressed his intention of retiring from the service on superannuation. The death took place last week at Kanohi, near Helensville, of Mr Alfred Williscroft, who was well known in Ashhurst and other portions of Manawatu. Deceased, who was very deaf, was killed by a special express train while carrying stores along the railway line near his home. He was 53 years of age and leaves a widow and four children. His who is in her 96th year, lives with her daughter in Palmerston North. The death occurred at his home in Wltangare/i recently of Ml - W illiam Dent, an old settler, at the age of 86 years. Born in Sydney, Mr Dent came to New Zealand when a lad of seven years. Whangarei. was the first port of call for the cutter Swan, in which the voyage was made, and it was here that the Dent family took up business on a site in Bank street. Ever since the family has been closely associated with the progress of the town.

The death occurred recently of Mr Rees E. Gooring-Thomas, of Epsom, Auckland, who for many years prior to his 'retirement in 1918 was very wellknown in the judicial branch of the New Zealand Civil Service, /having -..held the office of registrar of the Supreme Court in Auckland for 14 years. Mr Goring-Thomas was born in the Wairarapa in 1860, being the son of the late Captain W. Thomas, a prominent Maori War veteran.
