THE NEW YEAR
FINE WEATHER FOR HOLIDAYS. BIG CROWD AT FEILDING RACES. Brilliant weather prevailed for the advent of the New Year, and ho y makers had nothing to compiamoi. Large crowds attended the Marten races at Feilding on Saturday, while the various picnic resorts of tne district were very wall patronised, especially the Ashhurst Domain where the Salvation Army picnic was held. The town was thronged .on New Year’s Day, more people being about than on Christmas Eve, which tact was contributed to in no small measure reason of the better weather. Ihe streets were still crowded at a late hour, and many of the younger generation were about at midnight, when the New Year was ushered in with quite considerable noise, car horns being heard from all quarters of the town. The conduct of the town was exemplary over the holiday period. On. New Year’s Eve, however, the fire brigade received two false alarms, one coming by telephone and the other from the box at the corner of Duke and Broad strGots# To-day the racing at Feilding was continued, and again there was a good attendance, many from Palmerston North making the trip.
