RACING CARNIVAL

SUMMER MEETINGS CONTINUED

FOOTFALL WINS HANDICAP AT AUCKLAND

MARTON CUP TO RAPIER

RESULTS FROM VARIOUS CENTRES

The holiday racing carnival was continued on Saturday with meetings by the Auckland, Marton, Stratford, Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay and other clubs. Weather conditions were, on the whole, favourable and there were large attendances, but the totalisator returns again showed a falling off in most cases.

At Auckland the big handicap was won by Footfall, while Commendation triumphed in the Derby; at the Marton Club’s meeting at Feilding Rapier annexed the Marton Cup, while the principal events at Stratford, Tauherenikau and Hastings were won by Royal Mint, Hynanna and Morose respectively. ,

MARTON RACES

Civility in third place, the barest of margins away. The Railway Handicap, tho big sprint event of tho day, was a contest between four horses, the consistent Royal Damon, who enjoyed a first and second at Awapuni, carrying his record further by taking tho honours from the promising three-year-old Bank Note. Tho paucity of the fields had a natural effect on the betting activities of patrons, although the fact that favourites were having a very fair innings counteracted such to some extent. Tho club, had, however, the misfortune to experience a drop of £BO9O in the returns for the day, the aggregate being £32,456 as cornpared with £40,545 last year.

BIG CROWD BUT POOR FIELDS,

RAPIER SECURES CUP

ROYAL DAMON ADDS TO RECORD.

Dull, but fine weather conditions prevailed for tho opening day of the Marton Jockey Club's summer meeting at Feilding on Saturday, a largo holiday crowd being in attendance. Unfortunately the early closing of the acceptances saw tho scratching pen very much in evidence and what rrad promised to bo big fields reverted in some instances to on© dividend races. Tho Cup, however, saw tho very fair total of ten runners present themselves and a great race resulted in the honours falling to the South Island representative Rapier, who won from a fellow southerner in Fresco by two lengths in a fast run race with

FAVOURITE TO OPEN WITEL An indication of tho trend of events for the day was forthcoming in the opening ©vent when of the 18 candidates carded in the Trial Plate, seven declined their engagements, Archon, who had drawn No. 1 at the barrier, was promoted to the role of favourite, tho chestnut gelding carrying just short of 100 tickets more than Roburant, with fair support for Colarina, Takaroa and Bissac. The favourite was ono of the last to move, but was rushed to the front on the rails from Abbey Queen, Bissac, Colarina, Teremoana, Roburant and Takaroa. Tho field underwent little change in order racing round the bend save that Ranee had worked in behind Teremoana, Archon and Abbey Queen being still in the van. At the straight entrance the field closed up and Abbey Queen was quickly finishing with Colarina, Takaroa and the Bissac going up in pursuit of 1 the leaderr, Colarina just failing to catch the favourite by half a length with third horse three lengths back. Then came Bissac, Roburant, Abbey Queen, Teremoana and Limosa. Time, 1.17. POOR FIELD FOR HURDLES. The defection of Euchre, Potoanui, Glenidle, Highflown, Blood Red, Bonecto, Matu, Shut Eye, Boy and Pantler from the First Hack Hurdles made the event a one dividend race in which Lady Gay was selected by the public as their first fancy, tho Trentham representative carrying 172 tickets more than Elvaette with Halgina a bare eight tickets further away. The race lay between the trio, but Elvaetto made no race of it at the business end of affairs. Halgina and Star Chamber, the latter being the only little fancied candidate, jumped to the front at tho barrier rise and the pair opened up a gap on the other runners on the first time round. Going away from home Halgina had assumed command, but at the four furlong post Elvaette made a forward move and took the lead from Lady Gay and Halgina with Star Chamber and Axle a long way back. Lady Gay was a half length behind Elvaette at the final fence, but could make no impression on the Fox ton animal in the run home, Elvaetto winning by three lengths with third horse 10 lengths back with larger margins between Star Chamber and Axle. Time, 2.43 3-5.

PALETA’S WINNING RUN

Only four of the six candidates lor two-year-old honours went to the post in the Juvenile Handicap in which Palota, a double winner at Awapuni was, despite his increased poundage, selected as first choice, the Leighton gelding being entrusted with almost £SOO more than Tom Bracken with Otairi 190 tickets further away. The line was a little ragged when the tapes lifted and Paleta and Tom Bracken were the smartest to begin. Racing to the turn, Cavity worked up alongside of Tom Bracken who was in behind the leader, but with the straight reached Cavity dropped back, Tom Bracken and Otairi going after the favourite. Paleta, however, was never troubled to win by a good two lengths with third horse a clear length back, Cavity being well back. Time, 1.2. CUP GOES SOUTH. Ngata, Brigadier Bill, Stormy, Star Area, Rouex, Sottano, Kilmiss, Polar, Kilmezzo and Potoanui declined their engagements in the Marton Cup, leaving 10 runners to contest the honours. A good betting race saw Glenross wind up favourite, 130 tickets ahead of Rapier with a drop of £SOO to Civility. The filed was sent away on its mission smartly, there being an entire absence of delay, Diamond Ring rushing to the front with Glenross at his quarters, Civility, Rapier Allmarimba, Novar, Merry Day, Fresco with Kilfaire and Nukumai bringing up the rear. They ran in that order past the stands and into the back straight where Rapier headed Civility and at the turn for home ran in behind the loader. Rounding the bend the field bunched, Diamond Ring being still in the van. However, with heads straightened up Rapier ran to the front with a fellow southerner in Fresco, Civility and Glenross putting forward claims. The favourite could make no impression and was beaten into fifth place, Fresco getting seoond honours two lengths behind Rapier with Civility a head away. Diamond Ring was fourth, while next in order came Glenross, Novar, Merry Day and Kilfaire. Time, 2.7.

A GOOD PERFORMANCE. As a result of the activities of the scratching pencil, the field of 20 acceptors in the Dash Handicap was fined to a hare nine runners, the public going strongly for Great Day, the Day Comet gelding being entrusted with 1583 tickets, Ohui, the second elect carrying 700 less. Lieutenant Bill missed the jump out and tailed the field the whole way, Ohui and Volplane being the early leaders with Great Day, Lady Cynthia, Powhiri, Guadalquiver and White Ringlet next in order. At the entrance Ohui and Volplane were still together with Lady Cynthia ahead of the favourite, White Ringlet and Powhiri being next, the latter putting in a run on the outside. Half way down the straight Ohui appeared to be a certain winner, but Great Day came with a late rush and overwhlemed the opposition to get up in time to win by half a length with Lady Cynthia a similar distance behind Ohui. Volplane was fourth with Powhiri, Hypnotic and White Ringlet next in order. Time—lmin 15 2-ssecs. ROYAL DAMON CARRIES ON. The poor field of four runners presented themselves in the Railway Handicap in which Royal Damon was sent out a firm favourite, the Polydamon gelding carrying almost £4OO more than Mireusonta with Bank Note 245 tickets further away on the machine, Miss Hupana being little in demand. At the barrier rise Bank Note and Miss Hupana dwelt slightly the former being actually the last to leave the mark. The pair were, however, rushed to the front and were together in the van at the four furlong post with the other pair directly behind. At the turn into the straight Bank Note ran a shade wide, enabling Royal Damon to get through on the rails and although the whip was brought into play Bank Note could not recover the lost advantage, Royal Damon going on to add another victory for the holiday period to his credit by a length and a half with Bank Note half a length ahead of Mireusonta, who got up to beat Miss Hupana home by a length. Time—lmin 14 3-osecs. PANART IMPROVES. Nine runners left the birdcage to contest the New Year Handicap, but their number was reduced to eight by Ixilladdie suffering a ricked shoulder during his pi'eliminary, enabling backers to secure a return of their money. Horomea, a winner at Awapuni, was sent out a £386 better favourite than Panart, Catcall being 245 tickets further away. Conviction was first to show out following an excellent dispatch, Anchor, Horomea, Kilburn, Catcall and Petal being next in order. Going along the back Horomea and Assurance worked up into line, Petal, Catcall, Kilburn and Panart being together next. Assurance and Petal landed first into the straight from Horomea, Catcall, Panart Kilburn and Conviction. Panart secured a run on the rails, and coming w'ith a strong burst got up in time to snatch the honours from Assurance with third horse four lengths back. Horomea appeared to gain third berth, but the judge placed Kilburn ahead of the chestnut mare. Next to finish were Petal, Catcall, Anchor and Conviction. Time—lmin 48 2-ssecs. POLAR WINS AGAIN. Another one dividend race was forthcoming in the concluding event for the day, the withdrawal of Potoanui, Great Day, Benmure, Red Bob and Capitulation leaving a bare five runners to go to the post. Polar, a winner at Awapuni, was sent out a firm favourite, the Gisborne representative carrying 340 tickets more than Gold Box with Ngata 117 tickets further away. Gold Box was smartest awuy and going along the back had a three lengths break on Polar with Ngata and Santonio next, Kalalcaua being several lengths back. Approaching the straight entrance, Santonio hud worked up ahead of Nguta, while Kalakaua was also improving his position. Polar came up to Gold Box and while the latter hung on for a brief period, he gradually dropped back, Kalakaua heading him off in the run home, but could not get closer than a length to Polar. Two lengths separated Kalakaua and Gold Box while Ngata was next close up with Santonio last three lengths away. Time —lmin 27 3-ssecs. THE RUNNERS. AUCKLAND MEETING. FOOTFALL ~WINS A.R.C. HANDICAP. DERBY TO COMMENDATION. AUCKLAND. Jan. 1. The summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was continued at Ellerslio to-day in cool overcast weather. In the Newmarket Handicap Ballymoy fell over Merry Jest, who had come down at the half-mile post. W. H. Jones, rider of Ballymoy, was not seriously hurt, but it is thought that H. Lee, on Merry Jest, is injured internally. The amount handled by the t'otalisator decreased by £12,202 as compared with last New Year’s Day, the totals being £98,450 10s to-day and £110,652 10s twelve months ago. On the three days the decrease has reached £59,258. Morris) ... 1 5 Count Cavour, 10.2 2 2 To Monanui, 9.7 3 Also started: 1 Star Stranger 9.6, 9 Tanadees 9.2, 4 Mask 8.6, 12 Ruapapa 8.4, 8 Mandane 8.0, 13 Star Ranger 7.11, 6 Clarinda 7.10, 3 Desert Glow 7.10, 10 Oreum 7.9, 15 Day Guard 7.7, 11 Barometer 7.3, 16 Gold Jacket 7.0, 17 Lord Star 7.0, 14 Papatu 7.0, 18 Royal Present 7.0. Star Stranger was the favourite from Te Monanui, Mask and Desert Glow. Star Stranger was near the middle of the field early, but he was within striking distance entering the straight, but he could not get a place, finishing close up to the placed horses. However, it was a good effort, and he was a bit unlucky. Te Monanui lost his chance through being badly placed in the first six furlongs, and, with half the journey over, he was still near the rear. Ho came with a great rattle over the concluding stages, to finish under the judge’s box, but the ground to be made up -was just beyond him. Both Count Cavour and Footfall were in good positions throughout, and in the ran home they stayed on after the leaders had given out. Footfall pulled up in splendid condition after the race. Tanadees finished on well again from the rear, while Star Ranger, who was ridden by McTavish, ran a good race, finishing very close up. Desert Glow also ran an excellent race into fourth place, and, had he been able to get clear earlier turning for home, ho might have won. Oreum was in the van for a mile and a quarter and then retired. Clarinda was also near the front for/the same distance, and she followed Oreum into the straight at the head of the field. From that stage, however, Clarinda ceased to be a possibility, and it is unusual for her not to stay. Mandane ran a poor

race and Mask was never prominent. Footfall paid double figures. Time, 3.34 2-5.
