The Toronto University on Tuesday tvill confer a doctorship of laws on Mr S. M. Bruce.

Ml* and Mrs A. Kingston, senr, of Hamilton, arrived in Pending tins morning on a visit to their son, Mr A.Kingston. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr C. J. B. Norwood) is a visitor to Palmerston North.

Among the visitors to Palmerston North is Mr W. E. Jackson, manager for New Zealand for Gordon and Gotch (Australasia), Ltd. Senior-Sergeant Fitzpatrick, of Gisborne, who was formerlv stationed at Palmerston North, is revisiting tins centre. He is on his annual vacation and is accompanied by Mrs bitzpatrick.

Mr T. B. Merson, late manager of the Feilding branch of the ManawatuOroua Power Board and now engineer to the Kaponga Electric Power Board, has been spending the holidays in h eliding. Mr Hodge, the Wanganui Education Board’s architect, visited Fo'xton this week to inspect the site upon which is to be erected the building to accommodate the secondary and technical classes in connection' with the District High School. —Foxton Correspondent. Finn, S.J., prefect of St Ignatius’ College, Riverview, Sydney, and a prominetn educationalist, has been appointed to the University of, Tokio, Japan, and will leave Svdney towards the end of next month. Sir Alfred Young, K.C., Chief Justice of Fiji, will arrive at Auckland next Sunday in order to spend a vacation in New Zealand. He will be away for four or five months, and hopes to visit Australia before he returns toFiji. While he is absent from Fiji the Hon. K. J. Muir Mackenzie, AttorneyGeneral, will act as Chief Justice. A painful accident befell Mr J. Brophy, of the “Evening Standard” staff at Plimmerton on Christmas Eve. "While removing a dog from his mother’s house at night, Mr Broplry fell from a slippery high step on to the ground, sustaining a comjKiund fracture of the jaw. Mr Brophy at present is an ip mate of the Wellington Hospital, and though progressing satisfactorily, lie will have, to undergo medical attentiioin for some little while.

The many friends of Mrs Norman Sinclair, of Palmerston North, will regret to learn of the death of her father, Mr Thomas Henry Holden. The' deceased gentleman, who was 85 years of age, was born in England and prior to coming tc the Dominion five years ago to take np his residence with his daughter, had his home in Settle, a town in Yorkshire. Mr Holden was a gentleman of splendid physique and, during Mrs Sinclair’s visit to England five years ago, he walked a distance of 23 miles without feeling any strain. Besides his daughter, deceased leaves two sbns who reside in England.

Information has been received in the Dominion that Mr George Alexander Wilson, for many years an officer of the Bank of New Zealand in Otago, and afterwards inspector of the Bank of Australia and manager ip Melbourne and Sydney at different times, died in Sydney at an advanced age a few days ago. Deceased was a brother of Mr Alexander Wilson, rector of the Dunedin High School.* During the crisis in connection with the Bank of New Zealand in 1901 the late Mr Wilson was acting as inspector for the bank in Australia and rendered excellent service to the New-' Zealand Government by obtaining half a million pounds in gold and shipping it to Wellington.
