MAORI WAR RELIC.

YON TEMPSKY’S RING. SOUVENIR OF THE CAMPAIGN. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 29. An interesting souvenir of the early days in New Zealand, and particularly of the Maori wars, has been exhibited here by its owner, Mrs Norman Macleod, of Christchurch. It was a beautiful tie ring, once owned by Von Tempsky, who led the Forest Rangers in the campaign against the Maoris. The ring is a fascinating antique, consisting of seven tiny but beautifully made cameos, joined together on a metal band. Each cameo is supposed to have represented a prayer—one for each day of the week. The seven cameos are of different colours, alternate red, white, putty and black. The heads are exquisitely carved, and are evidently the work of an artist ‘of repute^ There was some connection between Von Tempsky’s ring and Paderewski, the famous Polish pianist. A letter was found with the ring, but unfortunately it has been lost. The ring came into Mrs Macleod’s possession through her father, - the late Mr D. Douglas Macdonald, barrister, of Dunedin. He obtained it from a man who had found the ring on the old battlefield in the North Island. Mr Macdonald treasured it very much, and often spoke of writing to Paderewski. The ring would be of some value to a collector.
